Urrbody in the club bring a Bordeaux varietal

Introduction

Coremill was in town and had a '91 Heitz Martha's begging to be drunk, so we all brought Bordeaux grapes to taste alongside it at a nice bistro with £3.50 corkage. Most were good.

  • 1966 Château Haut-Bailly 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Very well-stored bottle. Outstanding and near peak. Sweet and even a bit ripe dark fruit. Tobacco smoke. Savory texture. Tannins gone. Not quite as much complexity as I'd hoped, but satisfying all the same.

  • 1997 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 86 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

    Chocolatey, syrupy, jammy dark fruit. Pruney nose. Not much acid. Tannin lingers on the tongue long after swallowing. Not heavy, but cloying. Completely falls apart in the glass after two hours. Price adds insult to injury. Surprised to see so much love for this wine on CellarTracker--this wasn't an optimally stored bottle, but it wasn't flawed either.

  • 1995 Château Valandraud

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Dense, tightly wound, tannic, perhaps a nudge heavy. Bretty at the open. Some chocolate and dark fruit. Wants another decade to reveal its lurking complexity. Doesn't taste manipulated despite its garagiste reputation. 89 to drink now, 93+ potential.

  • 1991 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Unmistakably Heitz Martha's. Mint Oreo cookie dominates the nose. Dark fruit. Good creamy mouthfeel despite being highly tannic. Integrates with air, showing hints of herbs and chocolate. Still only showing a fraction of its potential--this is a good ten years from peak--but I've had a fantastic older bottle and know where this is going. Good QPR at $95 from Winebid.
