Introduction

I attended this event with Brad thanks to a last minute invite from my good bud Cyrille who works for the Champagne House.

Flight 1 - Sea Urchin Veloutee, cauliflower (1 Note)

  • 1999 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

This was enjoyed with passed canapes before the seated lunch at RIA. Served from a magnum.
A little toasty. Apricot fuzz and butter. Clean palate. Light caramel. Great weight. Moderate fine bubbles. Extremely elegant.

Flight 2 - Trout, pomelo, caviar (1 Note)

  • 1995 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

I don't know if it was the setting or the fact this was poured from a Methuselah, but this go around with the vintage presented was spectacular.
Burgundian funk on the nose. Lots of buttery brioche. Incredible fruit - melon apple, lychee, coconut. Fantastic mouth feel . Super fragrant and fresh.
So massive and complex. So many bubbles; you can barely see through the glass.
So much elegance but power - the queen on the chess board.
One of the best Champagne experiences to date. Flowers, nuts, English toffee after some time in the glass. Perfect harmonious balance. A great example of how 1) large format wines are somehow tastier than their smaller counterparts (sometimes) and 2) the company, venue and food can often alter the perception of the wine and of course experience as a whole.

Flight 3 - Lobster, baby gem (1 Note)

  • 1990 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Consumed from a Jeroboam. Darker than the '95 in color - noticeably. Richer and more structure as a whole too. Some funk, saline, hard boiled egg yolk - really unique and intriguing.
Touches of sea water that I and the table were impressed with. So much rustic baking spice. Lots of honey, spring flower and chamomile. Really an honor to be able to try this stunning large format.

Flight 4 - Cranberry, filo, safron (1 Note)

  • 2000 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut Rosé 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Lovely copper hue. Touch of Pinot in the blend. Aged Riesling quality on the nose. Unique color. Nose sporting marmalade, wet rock and lightly roasted nuts doused with peachy stone fruit.
Briney quality that is enjoyable and fun to talk about.
