Lignier-Michelot Tasting with Virgile Lignier

Virgile Lignier came to Knightsbridge to taste a few of his wines from recent vintages. I brought along a few bottles from my cellar to show where these wines might evolve in a few more years.

• 2007 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis En la Rue de Vergy 87 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis

  Slightly floral to start. Accessible and ripe black and red fruit on both nose and palate. Well balanced already, this is a good young drinking Villages level wine.

• 2007 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières 87 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  Red fruit to start with some brown sugar and baking spice. Same flavor profile mostly comes across on palate but slightly short with a trace of bitterness on finish. Less interesting than I recall from a tasting early last year.

• 2007 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

  All abour bright red fruit. Red cherry on nose with some background floral elements. Tart red cherry on palate with moderate spice and really bracing acidity for now. Today this comes across as a bit pale, but there is enough density and extract hidden in the background that I am confident it will put on really good weight in another 3-5 years.

• 2008 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  Red cherry and raspberry on nose, followed by red cherry on palate. Lots of energy from middle to finish. Spice comes through nicely at finish.

• 2008 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Chezeaux

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru

  An unusual wine that was tough for me to assess. Red fruit on nose with a spice level that I imagine is largely from whole cluster. Flavors of tart red cherry with same good spice, but an unusual bitterness on finish that i also imagine could be from whole cluster if there wasn't quite enough maturity in the stems.

• 2008 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

  Red cherry fruit with lots of spice aromatics. Lots of red cherry on palate with excellent minerality and acidity providing lift and energy. Moderate fruit density compared with some other 2008 Grand Crus, I think this will be a good young drinking wine. Good finish today.

• 2006 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

  Red and black cherry on nose with some earthy elements. Mostly ripe black cherry flavors with some mint, anise and clove spices all the way through start to finish. Good textures in middle, then a fair amount of heat sneaks through on finish, very 2006 characteristic.

• 2002 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chenevery 90 Points

  Black cherry and plum on nose, then black cherry and blackberry on palate. Very dense and meaty. Good spice on finish. Some emerging forest floor, I imagine this wine is just entering its peak drinking window.

• 2002 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

  Floral nose with ripe powerful red and black cherry aromas. Same powerful fruit comes through on the palate with nicely integrated acidic and tannic structure. A complete wine still very young, this still came across as a bit too tannic near the finish, so give this another few years.

• 2001 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières 86 Points

  Slightly musty to start. Once that blew off, there was plenty of red fruit alongside fairly prominent tannins and acidty. Fruit started seeming more lean toward finish.

  Everybody agreed this was truly sensational for its level. Mint and licorice on nose with ripe, mature black and red cherry aromas. Red cherry on the palate with excellent spice. Long, lingering finish.
