I usually don't write up on Champagne but would seem impolite not to mention this amazing verticle tasting we had with Olivier Krug. Definitely the first Clos d'Ambonnay verticle in HK featuring the fresh off the boat 1998 but perhaps the first verticle tasting featuring this lineup in the world outside the vicinities of Krug. We started with the 95 Clos d'Ambonnay. Intense cinnamon toast with autumnal apple aromas. Fresh citrus fruits and honeyed nuts fill the palate. Classic elegance with an extremely rich expression of pinot fruits. Exceptional finesse.
Light gold in colour. Immense aromas of poached pears with spices on toasted buttermilk bread. Very focused citrus fruits with a complex array of honey and chestnuts. Improved materially in the glass with airing. This wine had volcanic energy and power that knocks you out instantly. The best out of the flight but definitely requires the most cellaring.
Rose gold in colour. Very difficult year for pinot noir grapes that year. Apparently Champagne had the hottest August since the 1960s. Yet they managed to produce such an extravagant and balanced wine. Exotic fumes of minerals and honeycomb, flowers and Asian spices fill the glass. Firmly structured with generous doses of ginger and grilled nuts. Endless finish. This was by far the most ready out of the 96 and 98 Clos d'Ambonnay.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Crimson red with lighter edges. Bouquet of minerals and warm apples. Profound structure and that big boned Bonnes Mares intensity giving this wine an impressive layered finish. Shame the reds were overshadowed by the 3 uber champagnes in this tasting. Also amazing to think that the two red burgundies were made from exact same type of grapes as the three Clos d'Ambonnays...
