Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Deep gold with coppery hue. Rich nose, a touch oxidative. Smoky oak, exotic fruit (pineapple) and apple. Similar palate. Low acidity. Spicy finish.
As the previous bottle, it got bigger, richer with air to the point of being undrinkable for me. Was ok upon opening.

  • 2009 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Bruised apple, volcanic minerality and a touch of lemon. Rich palate, a touch of RS, rather low acid. Right now this is pretty heavy to drink. We'll see how it ages.
    Correctly guessed Huet '09.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet (Hervé Souhaut) La Souteronne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche

Lovely nose. Floral with some cassis and blackberry. A touch of vegetable. Beautiful texture, a little more red fruit on the palate (strawberry). Very fresh. Reminds me of a light syrah.
Funny as with Souhaut, his Gamay always reminds me of a syrah and his syrah reminds me of a gamay !

  • 1986 Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Ghemme Collis Breclemae

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Ghemme

Some Italian funk, earthiness on the nose. Leather and licorice. Very balsamic. A touch of hazelnut on the palate, ripe cherry. Balanced even though I think they could have used less oak (seems like new oak to me). Still incredibly tannic.
But overall this is well made, perfect with food and very enjoyable.
    Guessed Nebbiolo from Valtellina.

  • 2003 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Opaque. Very creamy, strawberry and cherry. Strong licorice. Tannic.
Dark fruits on the palate and the finish is pure fresh licorice. Even though the finish is Italian, it was so ripe and fruity I did not think this was Abruzzo. I did not like it at all.
Got the chance to try it again on the 2nd day and this was much more balance, fresher and showed more its origins.
To revisit in a few years.
