Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1996 Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Quite a deep dull gold in colour. Rich nose, not oxidative. A touch of ginger and gentle oatmeal. Rich, rounded and broad across the attack and mid palate. Nice acidity towards the finish. Lacks a bit of substance on the finish but very nice indeed. ****

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1970 Bodegas Ollauri Rioja Conde de los Andes Gran Reserva

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Beautifully clear mid to full garnet - remarkable given this was in the back of a plane a few hours ago. Rich nose, a touch of orange, meat, a smattering of blood. Lovely attack. Smooth, harmonious, lots of nuance across the mid palate. Very harmonious. Getting meatier. When swapped in to a smaller glass this shows less focused and more caramelly. ****

  • 1978 Camus Pere & Fils Charmes-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

A little mute on the nose. A touch of meat and hedgerow. Subtle. Very silky smooth palate, long and caressing. Not much complexity or depth across the mid palate or finish but so what - lovely texture. Showing nicely and putting on a bit more of amshow with air. Bare ****

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Certan de May

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Rich, minerally, almost wet clay nose. Rich and lush and full across the attack. Depth and minerality here. Served a truffle warm so lacking a bit of focus on the finish. Dark fruited with liquorice and a touch of coffee. dry and slightly smokey. not quite the complexity on the finish but no far off. ****

  • 1996 Dervieux-Thaize Côte-Rôtie La Viallière

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very smokey, mineral nose, quite tightly wound. Starting to show some complexity after an hour or so but still quite tight. Fresh acidity, lovely nose - lots here, just give it another five years. **(**)

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • NV Harveys Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Rich Old Oloroso VORS

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

Deep brown. Rich caramel nose. Palate shows decent acidity. Lacks roundness and depth and presence of, for instance, Matusalem. A touch leaner and less generous. ***

  • NV Equipo Navazos La Bota de Cream 38 "Bota NO" 95 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

Same barrel as la Bota Nº 19. Currently pencilled in as release 38 for late 2012. Bottled in half two days before tasting. Rich, caramel nose with that characteristic edge of creamy sweetness. Lots of complexity on the attack. There's a wonderful mix of complexity, smoothness and bite here. Wonderful. An intriguing almost intoxicatingly floral, creamy, expansive top note on the nose. Real energy. *****
