Introduction

Various wines drunk at the Caramoor Jazz Fest with Paul & Peggy. A great time, some nice foods to accompany the wines. And a killer last set by McCoy Tyner.

No notes taken. Drank at Caramoor Jazz Fest picnic. Very nice on a hot (not too hot thankfully!) day. Served by itself and alongside tuna tartare. Very nice, modestly complex, great fruit, good acids.

  • 2002 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard 93 Points

Drank at Caramoor Jazz Fest picnic. Popped and poured. Initially an explosion of fruit on both the nose and the palate. Huge ripe strawberries, some white pepper, some floral notes in the background. After about 20-30 minutes, this really begins to come into its own. The fruit mellows somewhat, allowing wonderful floral notes to permeate the fruit, while the fruit integrates nicely within itself and into the wine. Nose evolves to ripe strawberries, rosepetals, lilacs, and a touch of white pepper. On the palate, it's wonderful fruit - tart cherries and ripe strawberries at the same time - and great floral notes with just a touch of minerality. The next day, this is drinking even better. Same profile, only more elegant and less fruit-forward. KB is definitely a producer I will be seeking out going forward. They produce in very much the burgundian style I love, rather than the over-the-top california fruit bomb style I loathe. This wine is still VERY young - I'd give it at least 3-5 more years (it'll reward more than that) and I'd make sure to decant at least 20-30 minutes if I were opening one now.

  • 1986 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

WOW!!! How is it possible that a 20 year old mid-level bordeaux can have so much fruit at this point? Stunning display for this wine. Wonderful fruits, some acids left, some good structure still, all melded into this wonderful little package! I took no notes, but I was very impressed by this wine. Not a "great wine" but definitely great for this wine. An outstanding showing. 91-92 Drink these now!

  • 1997 Venge Vineyards Scout's Honor 88 Points

Enjoyable wine. Clear port notes, with lovely fruit, some caramelized flavors, and a meaningful though not overpowering amount of sweetness. Very good for the end of the meal.
