Introduction

Darren and Sophia hosted this time round. Three wines this time for a small group of us, all of which went pretty well with the food. I thought the Riesling worked exceptionally well with the spicier dishes.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Mignon Mignon Champagne Brut Rosé 87 Points

    France, Champagne

Deep red rather than pink in colour, this had a pretty nose of flowers, strawberries and fresh raspberries. Much thesame on the palate - fresh strawberries and redcurrant, lots of roses, Bandung-like almost. Nothing overly complex, but really fun stuff.

  • 2010 A.J. Adam Hofberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

I thought this was very good. It had a classic Mosel nose of honey and nectar, peach and apples, a touch of flowers and a ncie bit of mineral. Nice. The palate had a certain amount of richness to it, but this was wed to beautiful definition and well-integrated acidity, so that the wine was wonderfully balanced as it opened up with flavours of apples, peaches and a slight tropical lilt. As with the 2010 Kabinett from the same plot, there was a bit of ripeness here, but I thought this was perhaps the better poised and balanced wine. I liked the finish too. Creamily textured yet nicely fresh, it drifted off with notes of mineral, spice and white flowers peeking out from amongst white fruited tones. Really nice even in its youth, but this really deserves time in the cellar.

  • 2005 Yves Boyer-Martenot Meursault Les Tillets 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

I thought this was a superb village. It had a lovely Meursault nose of gentel toast, brioche and cream scents weaving through a core of yellow fruit. Nice, but it was the palate that really impressed me. It had a really fresh, clean feel to it, with pure flavours of apples and lemons touched with some toast and cream, all very alive and vibrant all the way into a long minerally finish. Not the deepest or richest wine, but this superbly elegant and wonderfully balanced. I was very taken by this wine - it was delicious and very fine indeed, yet another 2005 Meursault that showed fantastic quality.
