Introduction

This has turned into a Christmas tradition -- a vertical of a higher end California Cab. Corra in 2009. Ovid in 2011. Not a disappointing wine in the batch and all are just a pleasure to drink. In terms of complexity and the most going on, the 2007 seemed to be the consensus.

  • 2006 Ovid Red Wine 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Jammy fruit on the nose. Opulent crowd pleaser from the get go. Spice, black and blue fruit, round and lush. Nice spice note. Fine, more subtle tannins. Long finish. Of the three Ovids, this was the most forward and was like a caged animal. When the cork was popped, it exploded out of the bottle. However, after some time in the glass and repeat tastings, it mellowed out and developed a bit more structure and the nice toffee/mocha note.

  • 2007 Ovid Red Wine 96 Points

    Surprised by how austere there was initially. After the more opulent 06, this was down right restrained for the first tastes. Much more minerality and graphite. There was also more red fruit. Over time, this gained weight and power while remaining nicely balanced and refined. The tannins were soft and silky but more prevalent than with the 06. This has more stuffing than the 06 and appears to have the oomph to go longer. This wine was my favorite of the night because of the layers of complexity and development. We shall see where these wines are in 5-10 years.

  • 2008 Ovid Red Wine 94 Points

    Some where in between the 06 and 07, leaning closer to the 06. This had some of the characteristic plushness and opulence exhibited by the 06, but it clearly is younger and will need time. It was more unctuous and maybe a little disjointed. It eventually smoothed out and came together. Bold blue and black fruits. Jammy. Caramel, mocha and toffee. All a bit more subtle than the 06 right now, with the tannins still playing a major role. This needs some time, but if it follows the 06 trajectory, it should develop well over the next 5 years or so.
