The 2002 wines lived up to the strong reputation of the vintage, but for me, the 2006 Vilmart stole the show.

Pale. Yeasty nose. Crisp apply fruit, medium dosage, clean mineral finish. Very attractive now.

2002 J. Lassalle Champagne Premier Cru Special Club

Light yellow. Caramel and brioche. Fuller style, some oxidation, terrific acidity, slightly tart finish.

2002 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Special Club

Light yellow. Toast and dried strawberry aromatics. Dry, very serious, excellent palate impact for its medium to light weight. Black fruit finish. This is a real Pinot Noir based Champagne, no question about that. Excellent quality for current drinking or more aging.

2002 Eric Rodez Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

Medium to light yellow. Floral, spicy nose with a lot of toast. Medium weight. Low dosage. Long, dry finish. I liked this.

2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année

Light yellow. Toasty, Pinot nose. Full bodied, yeasty, dry finish with strong flavor of black cherry on the end. Good but I thought the Bara Special Club was similar in quality yet much less expensive.

2006 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or

Pale and frothy. Lively orange blossom. Light and lively with a dry, highly mineral finish. Since it was lined up against mostly 2002 vintage wines, it is not surprising that this was the freshest of the bunch. Really excellent and my favorite of the bunch.
