Wednesday Night Blind - January 2012

Introduction

Our local wine group rang in the New Year with a nice dinner at Peter Pratt's Inn, the theme this month was Bordeaux, blind, $50-$150 - so that left a lot of room to play with. I generally am not a big Bordeaux fan, but there were some terrific wines this evening. The food as usual was superb. Dan Posner was the new addition to our group and was most welcome. We had nine people in total attending and overall it was a great night.

  • 2009 Wren Hop Chardonnay Shipwreck Savior 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Blind - Bob insisted I try and guess the winemaker, I kept thinking Thomas R. Brown, but it was Russell Bevan - I love Russell's wines, and this was a great version of Cali Chardonnay, not over done or blustery, wonderfully rich yet the oak while present was well mannered. It had a large streak of lemon cream pie that ran through it, quite interesting. Very nice wine.

    France, Bordeaux

    Clean as a whistle this wine wine, loads of grass and grapefruit notes, very crisp and clean, hints of diesel fuel come into play a bit and the finish has some mixed nut notes that were nice. Very quaffable.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac

    My "toss in" - Dark color, young tasting, lots of tobacco, could be smelling a cigar, good amount of red fruit, a bit tart, quite tight, but opens nicely. My last of a case. I like this wine for the price and it definitely could age another 10yrs.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Blind - Great nose, very Cali Cab like on the nose, ripe fruit, floral, oak, but the palate was very austere and void of fruit, obviously not quite complete at this stage, but I think it has great promise. My score reflects the wonderful nose and current state of the flavor profile.

  • 2001 Château d'Issan 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Blind - This was a nice wine, with a very effusive nose of cherry compote and old leather, after some time in the stem a distinctive "sweat sock" element appeared, but it wasn't off putting, the palate was very round and nicely built, a distinctive eucalyptus note emerged on the finish. I liked the wine overall, many liked it more than I did, but I think it was a very good wine.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Blind - I was not a fan of this wine really, it had a profound manure component to it, was a bit thin and vapid and then a sour cherry note emerged that was not very pleasant as it tasted a bit too sour. This was a very polarizing wine.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    Blind - This was a really nice wine, open for business from the jump. Dan had double decanted the wine some 5hrs prior to dinner and it was really singing. Wonderful notes of concentrated red raspberry and black berries skirted by a shell of cedar and Shitake Mushrooms, this wine had a deep masculine profile to it but fleshed out nicely and the finish was rather lush and soft. Terrific wine.

  • 2001 Château Margaux Pavillon Rouge 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Blind - This had a full nose of fresh crushed ripe plums and a wonderful melange of cedar chips, fresh rolled cigar and powdered cocoa. A very well balanced and structured wine that leans more towards the California end of the Bordeaux spectrum, it was definitely a bit New World, which I like.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Blind - I was not a huge fan of this wine, it was a bit odd with a very metallic taste to it, also had notes of rubber, it almost smelled like an old rubber stamp to me complete with the used ink. Very odd wine.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    My wine - This had a very expressive nose, on the palate it was a bit tart, had very good depth and structure, a rich, velvety texture, notes of plums, cedar shavings, pencil tips, mushrooms and some paprika on the finish. Very nice wine overall and it opened up nicely the longer it sat in the stem. Great match to the Filet Mignon.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion

    Blind - This had a sexy nose of fresh lavender and violets, very feminine and voluptuous, soft with nice curves, the fruit was soft and not overpowering but very nice. This was a nice contrast to many of the other wines, most of which had a harder profile.

  • 2004 Château Angélus 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Blind - This was a bruiser of a wine, but not harsh, very rich and deeply complex, good balance and a fairly tannic mouthfeel, the tannins were not tough but rather chewy. The core of fruit was distinctively black in nature with a hint of blueberry as well, a healthy dollop of cedar and allspice as well. I thought it had the most length of all the wine this evening and has a long future. I believe this and the l'Evangile would vie for my WOTN.

    Divine texture, a bit thick and honeyed, wonder notes of candied pears, apricots and hints of nutmeg, not cloyingly sweet but just right, well done.

Closing

Next months theme will be Barolo & Barbaresco and will be held at a terrific little Italian Bistro here in Yorktown - Don Tomasso's. I'm really looking forward to that one.
