    France, Champagne

    Lovely. Fresh cut apple, brioche, toasted almonds. Showing a few oxidative notes but still fresh overall with lively acidity. Long, rich finish.

  • 1992 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Slow-oxed about an hour before serving. Unappealing balloon nose. A touch of sweet apple fruit on the palate, but minerality is predominant. Not much acidity left, texture is round and viscous. Didn't enjoy this quite as much as my last two bottles, following the Henriot probably didn't do it any favors.

  • 1999 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champs-Chenys 85 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Slow-oxed for about three hours before serving. Woody, slightly musty nose. Light to medium bodied with medium acidity. Not much fruit, some cranberry, but this is dominated by toasty wood and savory, bacony notes. The acidity makes this a decent match for food, but its disappointing overall given the vintage and producer.

  • 1998 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Slow-oxed for about three hours before serving. Red fruited nose with v.a. Light to medium bodied with medium acidity. Baked cherry fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, sour cherries. Still pretty primary, but the spice notes add interest. Nicely balanced and drinking well now.

  • 1994 Lytton Springs Winery Zinfandel Sonoma County 89 Points

    Slow-oxed for about three hours before serving. Red berry fruit, violets and black pepper on the nose. Light to medium bodied with low to medium acidity. Fresh mixed berries and a bit of bramble. Quite primary. In a nice place but seems like it could easily go another decade or more.

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Decanted for about 6 hours before serving. Pretty nose of dried cherries, dried flowers and gingerbread. Medium bodied with dried cherry fruit and prominent baking spices. Definitely not a powerhouse VP but wonderfully balanced without heat or rough edges. A lovely bottle.
