Introduction
A fantastic tasting of the 2010 Burgundies - wonderful balance and much easier to taste en-masse than the Bordeaux tasting I went to last year. All of the wines had excellent balance - the reds had great acidity and depth of fruit. Some of the village wines were probably a touch overpriced, but without doubt there is incredibly well made wines being made across the board in Burgundy this year.

Crisp, fresh and light with a touch of lemon and minerals. Decent enough. Short term drinker.

2010 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes

Butter, acidity, lemons - quite rich and tangy. Needs some time to settle down. Is it worth £35 a pop?

Tarte and acidic on the palate - lemons and sherbert on the nose with a short finish. Needs time to come together - not sure it has the guts for glory.

Calm and milky texture with a very restrained palate. Needs a big-ass glass to let it breathe. Very nuanced. Good.

2010 Paul Pillot Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Charmois Blanc

One of my favourite wines of the night - lots of flint, minerals, lemon - very balanced with excellent structure. Give it a few months in bottle and this will be excellent. 2 years will work some magic. Very good to excellent for the price.

A lot of deep Burgundy Chardonnay fruit here - intense, rich sherbert with rich minerals. A wow wine. Needs time.

Very brisk red fruit with quite a pronounced tangy palate. Firm fruit, with angular alcohol. Needs a lot of time.

Very firm and aggressive red fruit, light with a tarte finish. There is depth here that needs time to show, if at all.

This already at this stage has a lot of black fruit and deep nuance - liquorice, spice - great balance of tannins. Will be very good.

Not too sure about the price they are asking, but on its own merits this is a decent entry level Burgundy with juicy red fruit and balanced structure - tannins, fruit and acidity are working well. But £30+ a bottle?

Woof. Big, massive, oompfy nose - herbal, spicy, minerals, dry meat. Big tannins here. Got the guts for some good ageing.

Massive meaty nose, dense and mean with a tangy, nostril tingling sensation. On the palate chunky and meaty - big and ripe. Needs a lot of time.

Really packed with flavour - fruit cake, spices - quite a tangy palate that needs serious time to calm down and mature into something quite excellent. Compared to a lot of Burgundy 2010 this is good value. Of course, all things are relative.

Woof! Discrete but packed with fine black fruit - compact on the palate but there are delicate and whispy tickles of minerals and fruit that tease the palate. This will quite excellent in a few years. Such a tease.

Very distinct bubble-gum, Gamay nose with some red fruit coming through. Smooth on the palate but compact and promising. Very good. For the price this could be very good in a few years. For me, a buy.

Grrrrrreat nose - all dark cherries and deep, dark fruit. Like a cherry-coloured black-hole with the promise of tangy, mulchy mushrooms in 10 years.

2010 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot

You are never quite sure what you will get with Vougeot but this really does flick the finger to the producers from this vineyard who cash in on the name but make little effort with their wine - this is very distinctive and has a tangy nose with muscular and bitter chocolate and cherries and a depth of fruit that lingers. Should be quite something in 10 years. Very very good.

Already quite wonderful with a sweet and funky fruit element to the palate and nose Tight on the palate but there is going to be some serious depth here. Very alluring already and will mature into quite a stinky, earthy wine. Excellent.

Grrr....woof.....grrr. Nice stuff. Very tight and restrained nose but this slowly unfurls to reveal soy, beef stock, grilled meats - this has a lot of potential that only 10 years+ in the cellar will provide. Woof.

Whispy light and ethereal on the nose and palate but with great persistence - great acidity - some seriously good fruit here that lifts this up beyond the palate and nose into something much more regal and refined. If only I could afford it. Will be quite special in a decade.

Oh yes, this has a meaty, deep fruit cake nose and palate with a nutty, chewy structure - smooth on the palate, layered and unfurling - complex already. Will be quite brilliant.

My goodness, this is rather good already. Sweet, perfumed nose of alluring cherries, sous-bois and aniseed. Structured but not overbearing. A 20+ year wine.

Perfumed nose of violets and roses with a lifted, delicate and precise aroma of cherries - subtle and very elegant. Good now - wonderful in a few years. Light and whispy and dances on the palate.
