Introduction

Plan was to compare two solid and reliable producers from the Bordeaux area.
Some ringers/substitutes from the same appellation were used fo fill in the holes.
All bottles served blind.

Flight 1 - Palate cleansers (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Sepp Moser Grüner Veltliner Gebling Kremstal

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

    Clear light yellow. Plump, well-rounded in the nose. Grannies and a buttery-kind of lime jump from the glass. Quite long for this kind of wine and the finish has a nice and spicy kind of herbaceousness (fennel, parsley, white pepper). Very youthful at the moment. Nice one!

  • 2002 Schäfer-Fröhlich Weißer Burgunder trocken

    Germany, Nahe

    Medium and bright yellow. Modernistic nose of banana-esters, orange- and lime zest and plentiful use of oak. In the mouth it's broad, sultry and ripe, showing smokey, buttery, minty chardonnay-like yellow fruit. Fills the mouth, but its finish is a bit short. Nice glass of wine, and I get the feeling that this wine was made in the cellar rather than in the vineyard (which is a conclusion, not a judgment). Satisfying, but not very provocative or complex.

    Cedar, cigar/tobaccoleaf, lavas, coffee, pencil. Lovely, velvety mouthfeel. Perfectly matured and best of my bottles to date. Previous ones seemed a little OTH. 17,5/20.

    What a surprise! Lean and elegant, of course. But there's still some berryfruit floating on top. Lovely freshness. Textbook luncheon-claret! Bravo. 16,5/20

    More evolved and rustic than I thought it would be. Barnyard, prunes, chocolate, paprika. Sturdy and austere. Slightly disappointing 16/20.

    Awkward... Sweet syrypy sour-cherry frame, a bit like 'grenadine'-lemonade. Atypical for this chateau and vintage. Off-bottle?

    Leather, chocolate, coffee, black fruit. Ripe and tasty, right in its midlife IMO. Has a nice savoury and astrigent (classical?) edge. Liked it. 17/20

    Very good showing tonight. I really like my 99-ers! Very open and easy to drink. Lots of red and black fruit. Some secundary signs seeping through. Extremely fresh and cool. Excellent 'restaurant'-wine. 17/20.

    Very interesting nose with spicy impressions like incence, mint and eucalyptus. Soft and pretty sweet in its entry. Silky tannines. Just a tad simple and short on the palate. 16,5/20

    Nice and juicy, somewhat lighter and more elegant than Poujeaux from 2000 and 2003. Redcurrant, cappuccino, good integrated level of oak and toast. 17/20

Flight 9 - Cooling down (1 Note)

  • 1999 Château Guiraud

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    No formal note. The yellow fruitprofile is still very fresh and clean. Also hints of beeswax, orange-zest. Although the structure of the wine is in a rich style, the wine has a very elegant feel with it.
