Monthly Tasting Group: Rieslings and Thai Food

This was the monthly tasting group event. The theme was Rieslings and Thai food. 18 of us gathered and split into 2 groups. The food was great, the price was right, and the wines didn't disappoint. There was not a lot of sharing of wines across tables tonight! They must have been too good!!

• 2007 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Kabinett

  Germany, Rheingau

  Light golden color. Drank one glass over an hour. The nose is really muted on this, very subtle petrol, barely detectable citrus. The palate is not much better, citrus, a little acid still, but fairly flat. Drinkable, but not very interesting. At least one in the group thought this was oxidized or heat damaged. Current impression is 86, but I will withhold the score given this may be flawed.

• 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  Pale green color. Nose shows peach, apple, tropicals, floral, mild fusil. The palate is creamy with nice depth and consistent fruit, quite vibrant, zesty minerality. Good balance, long finish.

• 2009 Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  Pale green color. Drank one glass over 1.5hrs. Nose shows a nice streak of pear, very fresh, tropical fruit, mineral. Nice a acid on the front end, less sweet initially more like a Kabinett, but gains weight and sweetness in the glass, tangy, fresh, consistent fruit. nice finish.

• 2006 Weingut Knoll Riesling Smaragd Dürnsteiner Schütt 92 Points

  Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

  Light gold color. Aerated in to glass and drank 2 glasses over 2+hrs. Nose has citrus, slate, petrol, lots of minerality. The palate has a lot of body, depth of flavors, very complex, tangy minerals, lemon, lime, good acid, long finish. This drank more like a Kabinett than the supposedly Spatlese equivalent that is Smaragd. Quite a contrast to the lighter Germans that came before it in the tasting. Quite nice.

• 2002 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese 91 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  Light gold color. Drank one glass over 2 hrs. Nose comes off somewhat muted, lemon, lime, very subtle fusil. Palate is fairly rich, round, tropical fruits, citrus, acid seems to dominate the sweetness currently. medium finish.

• 2007 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  Light gold color. Drank one glass over 2 hours. Nose is bright with fresh citrus notes of lemon & lime, minerals. Palate is lively with tropical and citrus fruits, fresh, good balance, long finish. Another very good '07 with a bright future. More vibrant than the '02 tonight. 92+pts.

• 2007 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  Light gold color. Drank one glass over 1.5hrs. Great nose, tropicals flowers, citrus, grapefruit, apple, mineral, earth. The palate is fresh and light, yet the depth is obvious in the mouth. Consistent flavors, long zesty finish. Excellent, can't wait to see this down the road. 93+pts. My #2 WOTN.

• 2006 Wagner-Stempel Siefersheimer Höllberg Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

  Light gold color. Drank one glass over an hour. Nose was muted, subtle peach, apricot. Came off as a bit sweet and flabby. Not bad, but lacked the acid to pull it off completely.

• 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 94 Points

  Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 1 hour. I fully admit I am a fool for this wine. I love it. It has an intoxicating nose of tropical fruits, fresh flowers, minerals, honey, peaches, a touch of fusil. This just explodes on the palate, vibrant, fresh flavors, great depth, layers of lush fruits. Wonderful balance of sweetness and acid, very long finish. Wow, just a baby and so approachable now. It is hard to keep your hands off this wine. My WOTN.

  Light-medium gold color. Nose is restrained. Palate has nice viscosity, round, sweet, a bit candied, ripe fruits of peach and citrus. medium finish.

  Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

  Pale gold color. Drank a small pour. Nice nose with butterscotch, pineapple, lime, lemon, mineral. The palate is zesty, lemon-line, pineapple, not overtly sweet, nicely balanced overall. Very good. 91+-92pts.

My WOTN was the 2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese followed closely by the 2007 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese.
