    Brought by Sandy. Light yellow. Very dry on the nose: minerals, slate, peach pit, a touch of lime or lemon. Quite nice on the palate and not as austere: stony and juicy, bitter fruit pits, racy, clean and stark. Not a blockbuster, but a solid wine and a good value. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.

    Bought by Justin and Danielle. From magnum, auction 2009 bottling, so this is probably different than other wines listed here. Medium yellow. Rich minerals, ripe fruit: apple and banana. Very ripe and rich on the palate. Golden apple, banana, honey. Decent acid. more green apple and lime on the finish. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.

  • 2010 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett #6 92 Points

    AP #6. Brought by me - just purchased from Crush. Light green-yellow. Gorgeous nose: bright and saliva-inducing. Lime and minerals, almost electric, floral - with some of that great lime creme that I love so much. Similar on the palate: lots of lime, screaming minerals and slate, electric but creamy. Finish is tasty, but not all that long. I've always considered Schaefer's Domprobst to be one of the top cuvees in Germany, and this is just more evidence - I like these wines consistently more than the Himmelreichs. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16/20.

  • 2005 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 94 Points

    AP #2. Brought by Max. Medium gold. Amazingly complex nose: very creamy and smokey, almost vanilla/botrytis cream, wax, peaches. Rich and delicious on the palate: lots of sweet fruit - peach, nectarine, but with solid acid, Very 05 - ripe and rich but structured and not at all flabby. Really excellent. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

    AP #9. Brought again by Max (yes, he was very generous.) Ripe nose of brown spices, apples. Very rich on the palate - pear, creamy, softer than the 05 Kabinett we also drank this night. Is this closed? It seems somewhat soft to me, and I do not see the structure, but given my experience with older Egon Muller wines, I am willing to defer judgment and assume that we aren't seeing all this wine has to offer - I would wait 5 years on this, but I do like my Riesling mature. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4+/6, Finish - 4+/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 13.5+/20.

    AP #23. Again, brought by Justin C and Danielle K. Really excellent nose - focused and distinctive. I'm assuming this is showing a lot of terroir, but I don't know much about the vineyard (you'll have to ask Matt - he's the expert.): spicy, white pepper, flint, lemon-peach-nectarine. Very sweet on the palate: peaches, a little cloying, again with the spices and white pepper, salty and spicy at the end. Nice. Probably needs some time for the palate to lose its baby fat. Try again in 3-5 years. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4+/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 15.5+/20

    AP #14. Purchased last year from Spectrum auction. Deep orange-amber color (Matt says amber, not orange). Creamy nose of botrytis, baked peaches and apples, fruit, spices - a dried component that ends up being tea and herbal. With time, a tangerine/marmalade component comes out in the nose, along with creamy with spices and honey, maybe a touch of cocoa or coffee? A heady melange that makes one weak in the knees. Perfumed on the palate - enters sweet, lots of tea and herbal notes, lots of spice, baked apple and peaches again. Really complex and symphonic. A little baroque - a touch dried and disjointed. Missing just a bit of acid - not as lively as I would have hoped. A little dry and short on the finish, but that's nitpicking - great flavors of tea, spice and botrytis. I've been drinking the JJ Prum WS GKA for about 20 years now (from a different auction lot) and I have to say that while this is still awesome, it's a touch past it's prime - maybe 2-3 years. The pieces are no longer fitting together perfectly. Expect a slow decline. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.
