  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

  Pale. A bit of brett and wood toast. Light weight although it does have a little mid-palate sap. Pure fruit, violets atop a somewhat overdone woody base. Tart finish.

• 2010 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  Deeper ruby than the Clos Prieur. Slightly pungent, minty nose. Light impression, but tremendous intensity and expansion of black fruit in the mouth. Earthy finish, gorgeous balance and more than enough material to relegate the wood to its proper supporting role. Very long. This is a huge step up from the previous wine, and I'm not sure the Ruchottes that followed was any better. At half the price of that wine, it was easy to decide to purchase a few bottles of this.

• 2010 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes-Chambertin

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

  A little less saturated than the Estournelles. Reduced nose with some menthol. Lighter in the mouth but really fine licorice/anise and black fruit that is equally expansive and long as in the prior wine. Wonderful mouth feel, good acidity, smoothly ripe tannins and a touch of wood. Both the Premier Cru and Grand Cru tried today are probably more promising and refined than anything I've had in the past from Esmonin. Well done!

Excellent set of Gevrey-based wines. Bring on the 2010 reds!
