Introduction

I didn't have time to try the breadth of great wines offered at this tasting, so focused on a few producers.

Flight 2 - Domaine Rousseau (5 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Barrel sample. Black berries on both nose and palate with some espresso and cocoa hints. Lots of acidity , but this Villages level has the stuffing to keep its balance. Good minerality, good textures as well.

  • 2010 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Barrel sample. Red berry aromas with a slightly floral start, along with some coffee. Sweet red and black cherry flavors with moderate density and power with fairly substantial tannins dominating the middle today. Good meaty spice emerges on finish. This will certainly need plenty of time in the cellar.

  • 2010 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting. Aromas of red cherry and raspberry with some alluring cherry pie components. Same red fruit comes through clearly on the palate alongside black cherry hints. Fruit is slightly hidden in the middle by firm tannins. Lots of energy, very good finesse on finish with same spice from the nose reasserting itself. A very good vintage for Rousseau CdlR.

  • 2010 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting. Unquestionably one of the greatest young Chambertins I have ever tried. With that out of the way...this starts with intense black cherry and cherry liqueur aromas along with Herbs de Provence. Intense black cherry and blackberry flavors with incredible density and concentration. Herbs and spice peak through from the background today, with the fruit center stage, supported by silky tannins and great acidity. Wine seems to expand and intensify towards the long finish already today, it's exciting to think about where this will be 20 years from now.

  • 2008 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Earthy red cherry aromas with some dried herbs. Same red cherry flavors with modest herb and spice support. Drinking well now even if a bit short and simple. Better than another bottle from several months ago.

  • 2010 Faiveley Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Barrel sample. Bright red cherry and raspberry aromas with good floral support. Same fruit on palate with lacy, classically Volnay character. Hints o f oak today that should integrate easily in 3-5 years. Very pretty.

  • 2010 Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Barrel sample. Black cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors with anise, allspice, licorice in support, along with some dark chocolate. Very elegant and well textured, this is wine I will definitely seek out, showing 92-94 point potential today.

  • 2010 Faiveley Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porêts Saint-Georges

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

    Barrel sample. Black cherry and blackberry aromas with some meaty character. Dense fruit with firm tannins, compact for now but this will always be a rustic wine.

  • 2010 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Barrel sample. Sensational start with black and red cherry with floral lift. Same fruit on palate with wonderful fresh thyme and tarragon flavors. Great acidity and energy with very silky tannins. This is a very sophisticated Cazetiers in 2010. 92-95 point potential. Tasted again before the Wildman dinner and this 2010 is even better than its wonderful 2009 vintage counterpart.

  • 2010 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Barrel sample. Aromas of black cherry with floral background. Dense black cherry flavors on palate that are starting to show a classically Gevrey animale character. Moderate length.

  • 2010 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Barrel sample. Blackberry and black cherry aromas with some clove and floral support in background. Black fruit on palate starts somewhat lean but then demonstrates lots of power and concentration alongside firm tannins from middle to finish. Long, well structured, very cellar worthy, and will probably need 15+ years to really show well.

  • 2010 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    Barrel sample. Nose starts with great spice alongside mostly black fruit and some floral hints. Flavors of black cherry and red plum also showing great spice. This wine somehow manages to be both incredibly powerful and elegant at the same time, also already showing grace and balance. This wine gave the Rousseau 2010 Chambertin a run for the money for best wine today. Easily showing 95+ point potential already.

  • 2010 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Barrel sample. Red and black cherry aromas with tarragon, black pepper and sage. Big, powerful, dense fruit accompanied by firm tannins. Explosive finish showcases the black fruit and spice. Probably will need 20 years in the cellar, but this will be an exciting Corton when ready.

    Floral start with some lemon notes. Good flavors of apple and pear, this will most likely be a good value every day drinker.

    Barrel sample. Aromas come across as tropical and fat. Peach flavors with modest minerality and length.

  • 2010 Faiveley Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Barrel sample. Alluring floral start with anise hints and stone fruit. Hard to move past the wonderful aromas, but the palate comes close to matching with ripe stone fruit to start, then turning leaner and showing more citrus near the finish. Showing 92-95 point potential between the two times tasted today (seemed slightly more exciting in the evening when I had a little more time to spend with the wine in glass).
