Tre Bicchieri

This is always a great tasting if you like Italian wines. My only complaint this year was that the book that they give you was flimsy and hard to write on while holding your glass. Many of my notes were smeared unfortunately.

• 2008 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia

  Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

  A young, well made wine, but it didn't stand out in the crowd like it has before for me. Darker fruits, some earth and bell pepper/herbaceous notes. A little vanilla.

  Rusty orange color. Red fruits, mint, a little vanilla. Very good.

  Mint, tobacco, structured, red fruits. Chewy and puckering. One for the cellar. Long finish. Good.

  Earthy nose, complex. Faint mint, red fruits, chocolate. Nice wine.

  Very nice. Red fruits, faint mint/licorice. Vanilla. Lots of tannins. Good.

  Mint, licorice, dark fruits. Softer than expected. Drinking well now. Very solid.

• 2008 Antinori Tignanello

  Bell pepper on the nose. Some earth. Dark fruits, lots of fine tannins. This was good, but similar to the Sassicaia, it didn't necessarily stand out among the others.

  I believe Donna Olga said this was the best two barrels but I could be mistaken. The art work for the bottle was also painted by an artist who stayed at the property for a while to come up with the idea. I have forgotten some of the details but the wine was delicious. I didn't write much except the word excellent!

  Tobacco and roses on the nose. Earthy, dry, tart fruits. Orange? Very nice. I liked this.

  Another nice merlot. Soft, rich, dry, complex. Really good but at $200 per bottle, I doubt one will find its way into my cellar. :-(

  Smells incredible. Apricots, honey, sweet but balanced with great acidity. Delicious.
