Dim Sum Club does Bak Kut Teh and Chicken Rice

Introduction

This was a wonderful way to end a long week of hard work, with some wonderful comfort food from Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh and Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice accompanied with a trio of very nice wines.

  • 1999 Maison Leroy Montagny 1er Cru Blanc 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Montagny 1er Cru

    This was nice. It had a ripe stone fruit and green apple nose shading into yellow fruited territory. Past the fruit, some chalk and stone notes accompanied the riper aromas giving the bouquet a nice bass note. The palate was also very much a child of its ripe vintage, with more yellow fruited notes, ripe lemons, some peach and another little bit of green apple pushing along in a creamily textured midpalate. Very sun-shiney, fruit-led I would say, but very nicely balanced and well supported by a nice bit of chalk and stone at the finish. I thought this was quite nice. Not the most profound of wines, but this had a good delicious depth and was at a nice place for drinking.

  • 1982 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva 93 Points

    This was quite beautiful. More Burgundian even then the Burgundy on the same flight, it was a beautifully resolved, absolutely elegant Rioja - quite a step up from the last bottle of 1982 Riscal we had which appeared to be on its last legs. There was a beautiful nose here, with a charming waft of dried rose petals, dried cherries and dusty earth with a bit of slightly smoky, hot stone accents - a bit Barolo-like on that note. The palate was a Burgundy-ringer though. The slight thinning-out on the last bottle was completely absent here. What we got instead was a warm, hearty mouthful of dried strawberries and slightly stewed cherries, smoke and earthy mineral wrapped in wonderfully plush, almost silky tannins and a lovely lift of fresh acidity. Lovely stuff, and the little bittersweet twist of coffee grounds and ground herbs just wrapped it up beautifully. At a perfect place now, this was a treat.

  • 2002 Guillemard-Pothier Beaune 1er Cru Grèves 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    Probably the best bottling I have had from this house so far. This was a nice, rather forward 2002 Beaune. The nose was very expressive, almost aggressive, with deep aromas of black plums, and ripe, almost stewed cherries along with damp, foresty earth seasoned with a hint of spice. Nice. The palate showed the same generous ripeness as the nose, but it was very well balanced as a good 2002 should be, with a sappy show of rich black cherries and plums. My only issue was that it was rather forward, with soft, almost a bit unstructured tannins leading into a rather undefined finish. There was a nice linger of black fruit in the distance though. Quite yummy. This was constructed in a rather in a warm, early drinking style, but I did enjoy it. Drinking well now, and it went very nicely with our Bak Kut Teh (stewed pork ribs in herb stock) too.
