  Dark color. Burnt rubber nose. Tart, high acid black fruit. Medium weight. Licorice finish.

  Very dark color. Much cleaner than the Il Cotto. Woody base. Lush, ripe blackberry fruit. Tannic. Big, modern version of Barbera.

  Medium depth. Fragrant aromatics full of rose. Not at all fruit driven, in fact, quite dry and earthy. Not that flavorful.

  Some black licorice. Light Nebbiolo flavors, some tar. Elegant, moderate length. Good acidity and no trace of wood. Good basic Barolo.

• 2007 Gianfranco Bovio Barolo Arborina

  Light ruby. Strong scent of cocoa. Light weight weight but intense with good spread over the palate. Harmonious and long with repeating coffee tones. Excellent and my favorite wine in this line up.

  Medium ruby. Fragrant and high toned. Less body than the Arborina but good core of licorice and tar. Tart, tannic finish. Not for current drinking.

• 2000 Gianfranco Bovio Barolo Bricco Parussi Riserva

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Tawny. A bit of VA. Faintly sweet fruit. Complexity imparted by menthol, green notes. Medium length that is pinched by high acidity. Mature and good.
