  • 2000 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

    Ripe stone fruit on nose just starting to show some signs of maturity, accompanied by enticing baking spice. Lush peach flavors on palate with same spice. Long, powerful finish shows intense minerality and hints of citrus. Long life going forward.

  • 1999 Marc Colin et Fils Montrachet 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Subdued nose to start, which leads to great orchard fruit on palate that keeps picking up weight and intensity towards middle and finish, accompanied by lots of nuanced spice. Not a blockbuster Montrachet, but everything is in incredible harmony today that you finish tasting this wine and just want more.

    Fat fruit on nose, coming across as quite ripe, close to muddy. Better black and red fruit on palate with modest spice. Balanced, but short.

  • 1993 Joseph Drouhin Clos Vougeot 89 Points

    Subdued black fruit on nose. Somewhat lean and angular on palate, with fairly prominent acidity and tannins. Probably still getting better, with plenty of life going forward but this doesn't show the balance to become much more exciting.

  • 1993 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Black and red fruit on nose with good background spice. Still very fresh and powerful, this is another excellent 1993 that will last for decades with the same powerful and precise black and red fruit going strong on the palate. Very silky, elegant, textured finish.

    Tough vintage to start, this was old, oddly un-Beze-like and uninteresting. Bottle and cork seemed in good condition.

  • 1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    Decanted approximately 2 hours. Black cherry aromas with very good spice, classically Chambertin-Clos de Beze. Palate was far more subdued and elegant, perhaps slightly shut down. Sneaky power emerged on finish, which bodes well in my mind for this wine's future development.

  • 1991 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Open 2+ hours before serving, not decanted. Began with pale red fruit aromas, followed by tart (almost shrill) red fruit on the palate. But over the next 20-30 minutes in glass this picked up weight and balance and some more dense black cherry aromas and flavors also started to emerge. Perhaps an 81 point wine when poured, then an 88 point wine when finished 45 minutes later, so I'd suggest a good decant if tried again in the near future.

    Powerful black cherry aromas with huge spice. Flavors of black cherry and blackberry, licorice, dried thyme, and clove. Powerful with incredible balance all the way through from start-to-finish. Accessible and charming today with room to improve.

Flight 6 - Clos de la Roche (2 Notes)

  • 1993 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    a few hours in a decanter really helped as this was much more accessible than when I tasted in last a few years back. Dense black cherry aromas, followed by black cherry and blackberry on palate with modest spice that mostly emerges on the finish. Powerful and still highly structured with lots of energy and concentration.

  • 1999 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    It's tough to find a better wine than those vintages where Ponsot's Clos de la Roche is a success. 1999 was a huge success. Red and black cherry aromas with lush spice giving an almost exotic sense. Same fruit profile on palate with great textures and layers of flavor. This was the 4th or 5th time I've had this in the past three years and it is always consistently this good.

    Spicy, whole cluster perfume to start. Lush, ripe black fruit to start on palate with good spice. Moderate length. Probably at its peak today.

    Open 3 hours before serving. ripe black fruit aromas with great perfume, spice and barnyard hints. Lots of powerful fruit on palate with incredible Chambolle spice and lacy, nuanced textures. Long exotic finish. I am sadly down to my last bottle.

  • 1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares 90 Points

    Similar to the Groffier 1999 Chambertin-Clos de Beze tasted earlier tonight. Good fruit and spice, well done and easy to enjoy. Possibly a bit shut down, but not really showing lots of nuance. One can only hope this evolves into something like its 1989 counterpart tasted moments earlier.

  • 2007 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 88 Points

    Precise and pure red fruit aromas and flavors, but this also shows some of the more simple character of many 2007s, not demonstrating lots of nuance or texture. Slightly harsh on finish. Others enjoyed this wine much more than I did.

    From 3L. Peach, exotic spice and poached apple on nose and palate. Great power and concentration from start-to-finish.
