A visit to Bevan

Introduction

While out in Sonoma last week, I stopped by and visited with Victoria to sample some Bevan wines. Russell was in Las Vegas watching some basketball, but Victoria was an excellent host.

  • 2011 Bevan Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Robin's Cuvee Kick Ranch

    This had just been bottled a few weeks prior (2/6/12). The nose is very grassy. I suspect it will settle down. I think they use some steel and some new oak, so the oak should fatten up the wine. The grassiness carries thru to the palate. It does have a silky texture which is promising. Slight heat, but I think that calms down too. I really don't have much experience evaluating young SB like this. Its not a style I prefer, but I trust the winemaker, and would have high hopes for this later this summer.

  • 2009 Bevan Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Bab's Cuvee Showket Vineyards 95 Points

    This is a huge cab. Of course its very young. With air, it did start to unwind in the bottle. That said, a trait of Bevan wines is how well they drink young. Victoria credits it to Russell's ability to manage tannins by putting the wines in barrel without being completely fermented and allowing the fermentation to finish in barrel. Lots of cassis. A slight bell pepper note despite the ripe fruit which I really liked. The tannins are very silky. Outstanding wine.

  • 2009 Bevan Cellars The Curmudgeon Showket Vineyards 96 Points

    This is 2/3 Cab franc and 1/3 Cab Sauv. The nose has tobacco, cassis and some blueberries. Light and spry on its feet. Slightly sweet fruit. Delicious wine. 14.6% Shows some depth to it and seems like it will gain complexity but really easy to drink right now. Silky tannins.

  • 2006 Bevan Cellars Syrah Dry Stack Vineyard 91 Points

    Victoria knew i was out to bottle our Syrah, so she graciously added this to the tasting. It was interesting to compare this side by side with our 2009. The nose has nice boysenberry notes with some gamey meat notes that I liked quite a bit. On the palate, this has sweet boysenberry fruit, slight pie filling notes. While it is a cooler climate Syrah, it drinks rip and soft with no green notes. I liked it probably more than Victoria.
