Introduction

Yet another great wine dinner with great people. It was good to meet a few folks that I have not met before including vintage61. BornToRhone, and Khamen. The food was good, the wines were great.

  • NV Gaston Chiquet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    When the first glass was poured, a yeasty aroma of brioche filled the air. In addition, great meyer lemon, golden delicious apple, and pear aromas follow. On the palate, nicely rounded citrus with hints of apple and pear, hints of something tropical that I can't place. Racy finish, impressive champers and something I will be looking for.

  • 2005 Château Margaux Pavillon Blanc 92 Points

    Popped and poured. Nice nose of white flowers, mineral, herbs, citrus, and honeydew melon. On the palate, tart citrus, melon, herbs, vanilla, mineral. Finishes a little bitter but with great acidity. I would be holding this at least 5 years if I had more. I think it needs the time, but it was a great experience and something I would seek out again.

  • 2002 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Clos de Sainte Catherine 95 Points

    Opened at a wine dinner. Tremendous nose lemon oil, beeswax, ripe pineapple, yellow pear, honey, white flowers. On the palate, rich and round, pineapple, pear, honey, lemon oil, with a nice mineral streak running through the great transition to a finish with enough zing to cut through the big fruit flavors. Finishes drier than expected (a good thing). Great wine, great experience. Drink anytime over the next 30 years, it is only going to get better from here. I know this is classified as a dessert wine, but it works at anytime in the meal, a very well-balanced food-friendly Chenin.

  • 1998 Cascina Luisin Barbaresco Rabajà 89 Points

    Popped and poured at a wine dinner. On the nose, a bit dusty, with red berries, leather, and nice hint of rose petals. On the palate, red berries, hints of sour cherry, earthy. Finishes with dusty tannins and decent acidity. I think this could use some more time to knit together because it did fill in as the night went on.

  • 2000 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabajà 92 Points

    In a night of great wines, this stood out very well. Nice nose of sour cherry, dark chocoloate, hints of smoke and a floral component. On the palate, rich red berries, sour cherry, earth, spice. Balanced finish with sturdy tannins. Drinking very well now, but might improve with more time.

  • 2000 E. Guigal Hermitage 90 Points

    Opened at a wine dinner. Nose of black fruit, gun powder, roasted game, black pepper, and a very nice floral component. On the palate, black fruit, a little funk, herbs, pepper, smoked meat. Finishes with nice tannic grip and decent acidity. I would be holding this for a while longer, it needs a little more time to knit together.

  • 2001 Castello dei Rampolla d'Alceo 91 Points

    Opened at a wine dinner. Great nose of sour cherry, tobacco, leather, red currant, rose petals. On the palate, red fruit, tobacco, mint, hints of leather. Finishes with decent grip and great length. I would say it is at the beginning of its drinking window and seems to have the stuffing to hold quite a whilte at this level.

  • 2008 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia

    Not scored too painfully young. Nose is a bit walled off but I get black fruit, leather and a whallop of spicy oak. On the palate, black plum, black currant, spice, vanilla. Finishes with great balance but the wall of tannins blocks everything else out. Hold for at least five years. Impressive, gut impression 92-94.
