Introduction
Very lovely evening with a collection of Bordeaux wines, a lovely aperitif, and a ringer; great food and company.

Overall, the wines were all good and it was a bit tough to select a winner. Without coordinating the choice of wines, we managed to have some good matchups (young vs. mature; right bank vs. left bank; classic vs. modern styles). WOTN was the Ch. Leoville Barton 1998, whereas the overall assessment was that the 1996 Ch. Maucaillou was over the hill.
2007 Philippe Chavy Meursault 88 Points

Love this stuff, although it was quite a heavy dose of oak for such a thin vintage. Had body and warmth.

2004 Château Léoville Barton 88 Points

It was a bit mute and didn't really open up during the entire evening. But there's a pure, classic expression of cassis, and some herbal notes which makes me think I shall revisit in a few years with pleasure.

mature and open nose with a very classic expression. Still very fresh and well balanced - could probably age further still.

2005 Château La Pointe 87 Points

Tasted blind. There's just a whiff of butanic acid at first, but otherwise the nose is completely mute. On the palate, it is soft on the mid palate, but then morphs into a beautiful young, long finish with some spice and mixed berries. Finegrained tannins and freshness. I guessed this was a Pomerol, but had the vintage wrong.
Integrated palate, mute nose, very hard to know what to do with this, when we discovered that it was a 2005, the judgment was this probably just needs several more years.

1996 Château Maucaillou 85 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
Very mature, with leather aromas dominated by tannic acid. Sloeberries and graphite underneath, cassis - quite pleasant in fact. However, I find it hard to get passed the tannic acid smell, although it blows off somewhat after a few hours.
(Tasted blind but I guessed what is was from pure deduction and knowledge of L:s cellar and recent purchases...)

2010 Château Beauregard 89 Points

Tasted blind. This is wide open and exhibits a lot of spicy, warm fruit; the oak is very present here, but the fruit can take it. Good grip. Lovely, if very young - my guess was for right bank although I was led astray into guessing a St Emilion for whatever reasons. Needs to lay down for several years to let the oak blend in.

2009 Domaine de la Mordorée La Remise Rouge 83 Points

Warm baked dark fruit and vanilla, oak spice and very fiery from the alcohol content. Not my style, but not bad either. Blind, I guessed a zinfandel/merlot mix from California. Apparently this is a mix of marselan and merlot. This domaine always feels like a prelude to climate change.
