Introduction

The good people at Cellar on Greene at least once a week feature a flight of several wine from usually pretty well known producers. We get the chance to compare various varietals along side their counterparts. They are especially a fan of Marquis Phillips. Unfortunately, these are close out wines after the demise of that well respected winery. Never the less, the tasting was memorable and fun.

  • 2008 Marquis Philips Verdelho Holly's Blend 87 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

    Quite an interesting blend. Not my favorite style, but we will give them some respect for creating something unique at a value price. This is not a simple wine. There is lots going on in the fruit department. There is melon, lemon, and citrus, with a touch of honey. There is some of that grassiness. Pretty good viscosity for a white wine. It is a little too acidic for me. And there is some of that unwelcome diesel smell and taste in the background.

  • 2008 Marquis Philips Grenache 90 Points

    This is my favorite of the Marquis Phillips offering. I like it for what it is. Relatively light magenta color, you can see both fingers. Medium bodied. Very young, fresh and fruity. Ripe plum and cherry flavors literally jump out of the glass. They took it easy on the oak. It is very ripe, and 16% alcohol, which kind of reduces the influence of the tannins and acid. I thought the lighter style helped it drink easy and feel very good in the mouth, despite the alcohol.

  • 2006 Marquis Philips Shiraz 9 88 Points

    I have never developed an appreciation for this type of wine. I know people who love this, and it gets rave reviews, but not for me. This is a serious bruiser, a super big wine. The oak monster is on steroids here. There is 16% alcohol. Not that all this is terrible. I drank the whole glass and ordered another. There are mounds and layers of blueberry, blackberry, and all kinds of dark fruits. Iit almost works, big fruit, big oak, big alcohol. Is there enough acid for balance? Would less ripe fruit bring more complexity?

  • 2007 Marquis Philips Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points

    We opened this one a little too soon, it is just not ready yet. Right now it has loads of potential, but seems too acidic, this should age out pretty quickly. I really like the focused power of the blueberry and strawberry fruit. The secondary, non fruit flavors make a nice impression also, with cedar, road tar, pepper and thyme. The pretty toasty oak still has not integrated. I would like to think time will help these components balance, so we can enjoy this wine to it's true potential.
