Château Cos d'Estournel Vertical

This was a terrific opportunity to taste through 5 vintages of Château Cos d'Estournel, gain some insight into their style and better understand why many people believe they are worthy of first growth status. The vintages tasted were 2000 – 2004 with one similar Washington blend added in for contrast and comparison.

• 2004 Château Cos d'Estournel 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

  This had a ripe, complex, yet reserved bouquet of black currant, blackberry, black cherry, licorice, spice, mineral and cocoa aromas. The palate was ripe, concentrated, moderately tannic and dry with flavors of black currant, blackberry, licorice, spice, mineral and cocoa. My score was 91+ The groups average score was 90.9

• 2003 Château Cos d'Estournel 95 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

  This had deep, lush and layered bouquet of blackberry, cassis, mocha, anise and baking spice aromas. The palate was rich, dense and layered with flavors of blackberry, cassis, spice, mocha and minerals…more fruit than the other vintages tasted with it. My score was 94+ The group’s average score was 93.6

• 2002 Château Cos d'Estournel 92 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

  This had a strong and expressive bouquet of black currant, blackberry, cedar, sandalwood, licorice, spice and cocoa aromas. The palate was lush and complex, but lighter bodied than the other vintages tasted with it…flavors of black currant, blackberry, licorice, spice and cocoa. My score was 92+ The group’s average score was 92.5

  This had a dense, full and expressive bouquet of blackberry, sweet cassis, licorice, spice and mineral aromas. The palate was rich, dense and dusty dry with flavors that followed the nose. The group’s average score was 91.6

• 2004 Grand Rêve Vintners Collaboration Series I Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 93 Points

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

  This had a deep and rich bouquet of blackberry, black currant, black cherry, mocha, cocoa, licorice and spice aromas. The palate was rich and ripe with flavors that followed the nose. It was much more fruit forward than any of the Cos d’Estournel tasted with it. The group’s average score was 93.1

Everyone commented on the consistency of style…ripe black fruit, strong earthy characteristics, a powerful structure and quite dry on the palate. They were all fabulous!
