Phenomenal tasting put together by Udo.
My first intorduction to this legendary wine.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1989 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 88 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

    Golden yellow. Petrol, paraffine, orange juice and resin in the slightly shy nose. On the palate there is delicate oak and lots of fruit like pine-apple, apricot, oranges and also honey. Lovely acidity keeps this from going flabby. Very young and aromatically tightly knit. Will loosen up in due time. For now, 16.5/20

  • 1985 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

    Amber colour. A tad alcoholic in the nose, which also showes some oxidative notes. Has an interesting greasy, unctuous mouthfeel, but the focussed, well defined fruit (peaches, honey glazed tangerines) keeps this wine very succulent. Medium-plus length in the finish. Lovely 17/20

  • 1986 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

    Darker gold/yellow. Creamy and ripe bouquet of mango/pine-apple coulis. Wonderful balance of sugar and acidity. Slightly clipped finish, but overall this is very attractive. Drink now or within 15 years. 17.5/20

  • 1999 Château de Fesles Bonnezeaux 86 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux

    Copper, red gold. Full throttle sweetness, low acidity. Puzzling palate of whiteraisins, shoe polish and peppery botrytis. Somewhat sticky and hulking. 15.5/20

    Wonderful freshness and posie in acidity and sweetness. Tutti frutti, orange peel, fresh apricot. Very spicy and nutty too. Powerful and full of life. Great wine. 18/20

  • 1976 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 88 Points

    Fresh dough, butterscotch, caramel, brioche, butter. In the mouth there is mocca and beeswax. Still quite sweet but not very fresh and rather uninspiring. Had higher hopes for this wine. 16.5/20

    Seemed to lack some acidity. Stewed character of fruit: warm rhubarb, apricot, mango coulis. Very fragrant, slightly ester-like/chemical in the nose. Good, not great. 16/20

  • 1969 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 84 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

    Reddish yellow, colour of cherrywood. Dusty nose, marred by hints of oxidation. Slightly disjointed on the palate showing notes of iron, marzipan and apple syrup. Lots of bitterness in the back. Sub-par. 14.5/20

  • 1970 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 94 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

    This was the most wonderful wine of the afternoon.. Perfect balance between succulent ripe fruit and the caramel/butterscotch nuances of maturity. Grapefruit, pine apple, peach and apricot. Smoky toffee and toasted oak in the back. Lively acidity, enormous length. Wow. This is alive and kicking. 18.5/20

  • 1945 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 92 Points

    Incredible pure, distinguished and vivacious wine. Gorgeous notes of roasted nuts, white chocolate, Turkish Delight, mocca and honey. Sweetness has started to diminish but the balance of this 60-year old gem is to die for. 18/20
