Burgundy Dinner after Burgundy Tasting

Introduction

A few of us went to dinner after the great Knightsbridge 2009 Burgundy tasting. We started with a white burgundy at Rob's house, went for Peking Duck at Sun Wah and then back to Rob's house for more Burgundy. A tough way to spend a Sunday.

  • 2000 Domaine Jacques Prieur Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Citrus fruit aromas with good floral background. Peach flavors to start with good spice, accompanied and lengthened by impressive minerality and acidity for its level, finishing with lemon and lemon zest flavors at the end.

  • 2009 Rhys Pinot Noir Skyline Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Aromas of bright raspberry and strawberry with some sweet, baked pie spice and new oak. Same good red fruit on palate with good acidity and elegant tannins that provide good support towards a fairly long finish. Probably better after 2014 or 2015. If tasted blind, I could easily have been convinced this was from Chambolle-Musigny. Well done.

  • 2009 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Bottle had been open at least 5+ hours when tried again at dinner. Black cherry and blackberry aromas, still backward and a little brooding. Same fruit profile on palate with modest spice and structure that was starting to soften. Give this a long rest in the cellar.

  • 2009 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Popped and poured. Black cherry aromas with dried thyme and tarragon and new oak spice. Lots of the same fruit on palate, accompanied by lots of tannins and acidity. Perhaps not completely balanced yet, but this has the substance to be an excellent CSJ as the structure softens a little more. 92 points based on potential.

    Postscript...there was 1/4 bottle remaining that I revisited two days later. Same black fruit, slight bright, energetic and forthcoming, with everything else now in great harmony. Now showing at 93 point quality.

  • 2002 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    Popped and poured. Way too young to drink. Black fruit aromas with good floral elements. Subtle black and red cherry flavors on palate with hints of spice. Lots of acid, minerality give this a great mouth feel and balance, but there if lots more substance not yet coming through clearly. Decant for a few hours or (even better) hold for another 10 years.

Flight 3 - Relaxing after dinner (3 Notes)

  • 2003 Domaine Leroy Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    Slightly corked. I didn't agree at first but the fruit seriously faded over an hour, and this bottle was from the same cases as a stunning bottle opened about 3 years ago (so heat damage unlikely).

  • 2001 Domaine Jacques Prieur Musigny 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Elegant expression of Musigny with mostly red fruit, good floral charm and delicate spice. A Musigny that emphasizes precision, elegance and finesse over power. Drinking well now, but this should continue to evolve and drink well for another 15+ years.

  • 2000 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

    Decanted approx 20 minutes before serving. Floral aromas of red cherry and strawberry with subtle baking spice. Same fruit on palate with a well textured, perfumed character. Structure is perfectly harmonious. Slightly more open and better than another bottle from a few years ago, I think is now approaching its peak drinking window. Thanks for sharing, Jeff!
