  • 2010 Buty Chardonnay Conner Lee Vineyard

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    Wet cement, loaded mineral. Citrus fruit aromas. For Chardonnay, this really has some laser precision. A little oxidative side to winemaking. Some whole cluster here? As there is some herb on the palate. Really fun refreshment on the palate.

  • 2009 Clai Sveti Jakov Malvazija

    Croatia, Istria and Kvarner, Istra, Zapadna Istra

    'kl-y'. Wow, orange wine in appearance. Candied strawberry aromas. Apricot. Has a low acid feel in the aromas. Palate is much less fruity than the nose suggests. Licorice on the palate. 3 weeks of skin contact. Opaque glass RINGER!
    Istria is the peninsula just south of Trieste and Slovenia. This vineyard is right on the cliffs. Krast cliffs. This is the beauty of Slovenia. Not to not talk on Croatia.

    Salty and floral. Encrusted with dried flowers. Medium (-) acid, medium dry. 'lychee fruit'

  • 2009 Ayres Vineyard Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Nice tension in the aromas. Red fruits and really edgy. A grassy palate element. Palate displays an easy smoky edge. Has really nice structure for $25.99. A little grippy, lead pencil. Ex-winemaker at Domaine Drouhin. 14.1%ABV is indicative of the warmth that seemed to categorize the 2009 vintage in Willamette, where the temps crept above 100 degrees once or twice.

  • 2009 Ghostwriter Pinot Noir

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    13.6%ABV. Big fruit nose, some floral notes in there too. Medium (+) acid and really big fruit. Great tension again. Big fruit nose, more mineral and tense on the palate. Earth rides out the finish.

  • 2009 I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Etna Rosso

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

    'palomento' - great book on Sicilian wines. Palomento is a big building sized lever that pushes down to crush the grapes. Currently illegal in the EU, because it is rather unsanitary. Dried fruit palate, rather nice structure. Licorice and medium (+) body. This wine is made with Palomento, although illegal. Corky or funky? Just funky.

  • 2006 Spelletich Cellars Bodog Red

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    'Bodog' is Hungarian for 'Fritz'. And 'Fritz' means 'lucky'." Definitely a big and ripe Napa wine. RIPE black fruit aromas. Some brown sugar elements in the nose. 14.6%ABV. 'approaching Treana red territory' 83%Cab, 15%merlot, 2%Syrah
    Who was Bodog Spelletich. Hungarian Freedom Fighter, part of Parliment, fled with the Rombauers, but he landed in Iowa. He had two brothers beheaded.

  • 2005 Modern Wine Project Cabernet Franc

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    Red and black fruit, some really pretty and harmonious green aromas. Really suave on the palate. Tobacco aromas. Little bits of 'salted carmel' Really good domestic cab franc value at $25.
    'WA Cab Sauv - aggressive tannins, Cab Fran - more supple tannins'

  • 2009 Storybook Mountain Vineyards Zinfandel Eastern Exposures

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    2 brothers Grimm start this winery in the 1800s eventually it goes under. Seps buys this in the 70s, Andre Tchelistcheff is hired as consultant and tells Seps not to pull up his Zin. He ACTUALLY listens. Licorice and lively. 'grapey'. Herb and black fruit. Co-fermented with a touch of Viognier. Chateau Montelena also follows suit and co-ferments with Viognier, following the Storybook lead. Black fruit and loads of lift, peach juice.
