Mouton 86 vs Lafite 89 and some other friends

We tried to make this the best of the best of what is drinking nicely at the moment in our cellar.

• 2000 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points

  France, Champagne

  Maybe its bottle variability, or maybe its aging but this time it felt a lot different than almost a year ago.
  Well round this time, almost like an early 90s krug, more of a burgandy wine than a sharp Dom. Very toasty, rich and long. Well round and has lost a bit of its sharpness. Still very enjoyable. 92-93 and drink at will.

• 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild 98 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Decanted for 2 hours and decanting is advisable as definitely it helped the wine open up.
  Good bottle and cork and this time in singing mode.
  
  I think our earliest TN reflects this wine 100%
  "Class, Eleganse and complexity. We could really stop the TN here. The nose is really a journey into a complex set of red fruit, little earth and floral elements. The palate is velvety, layers and layers of beauty.
  Wine is still very much alive and vibrant but tannins are well integrated and post 1.5 hours the wine was fully singing. Nothing out of sync or out of balance, purity to the limit. Complex and kept on improving, never loosing any of its vribrancy. Truly magnificent. maybe 98 is low."
  
  Vs the Lafite 89. Outshone the Lafite but anyway the LAfite was never a match for this behemoth.

• 1989 Château Lafite Rothschild 96 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Decanted for 2 hours and we would definitely advice this as the wine improved , especially on the palte.
  Still very powerfull and vibrant wine with lots of life ahead of it. On the nose it is classic, elegant and simply beautiful. The decanting definitely helped here as it starts off a bit muted with a more alchoholic nose which howeevr developed into cedar, light earth and dark fruits. On the palate ones feels the power. It is still a youngester in many respects, although post 2h it mellowed to a fine elegant beauty. Has some hash elements on the finish that do deprive it of much higher score but will not dissapoint. 95/96
  
  VS the Mouton 86 - Was eclipsed by the Mouton and i think we did it a great injustice having it side by side with it.

• 1989 Château d'Yquem 94 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From Half Bottle.
  Colour points to a much older wine and we would have guessed early 80s. On the nose is ever so balanced with apricots, light exotics. Ever the long complex nose. On the palate the balance and finesse make an entrance early on. Maybe has lost some of its vitality but the wine was in general singing all the way. Beautiful. 94-95

• 1998 Alois Kracher Scheurebe TBA #12 Zwischen den Seen 92 Points

  Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee

  From Half bottle.
  Dark caramel in colour. Very dense. On the nose candied apple, caramel well balanced. On the palate it is dense lot sof residual sugar here ( 6% Alc) lush and round with lots of depth. Again the caramel notes are there. A touch low on the complexity which at this level of sweetness its to be expected. Almost tokaji essencia density. Not for the light hearted. 92-93 drink from now but this will last for ever.
