Visit to Domaine Julien Meyer

After visiting classic properties today, tasting these wines was like entering some parallel universe in Alsace. A few wines were good, but most were very off center. To each his own.

• 2010 Julien Meyer Pinot Gris

  France, Alsace

  Unusual nose. Mineral, chalky oxidative style. Not good.

• 2010 Julien Meyer Riesling Alsace

  France, Alsace

  Also relatively dark. Again, oxidized. Some low toned fruit and almost chocolatey character. Pretty strange to say the least.

• 2010 Julien Meyer Riesling Grittermatte

  France, Alsace

  This still has some fermentation aromas but lean and mineral with the terrific acidity of the year.

• 2008 Julien Meyer Pinot Gris Fanny Elisabeth

  France, Alsace

  Medium yellow. Between Italianate light style of Pinot Gris and richer Alsatian idiom. Dry and a bit austere on the finish. Best of the 4 wines to this point.

• 2009 Julien Meyer Riesling Muenchberg

  France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

  Floral with some acetone. Interesting complexity and soil but not completely clean. Lighter weight. Weird bottle.

• 2008 Julien Meyer Riesling Muenchberg

  France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

  Less floral than the '09. Light to medium weight, dry. Lemony with an additional unusual small red berry flavor. Tart, herbal finish. Another unique expression of Riesling, but not flawed like the younger Muenchberg.

• 2010 Julien Meyer Gewurztraminer Les Pucelles Sec

  France, Alsace

  Aromaic citrus. Bigger, richer and lusher than anything else here. Very good balance and legth. Really the only wine we tasted that I'd consider buying and drinking.

• 2001 Julien Meyer Sylvaner Zellberg Vieilles Vignes

  France, Alsace

  Medium dark. Neutral flavors with vaillin and a dose of earth. Terible, frankly bitter finish. This was almost undrinkable. An unspectacular ending to the tasting.
