Albert Boxler Visit

We were hosted by the very gracious and enthusiastic wife of the winemaker, who admirably juggled showing us the wines and chasing around a 2 year old toddler. The other 2 kids were in the vineyards with dad helping with a replanting project-truly a family run domain! Good wines if not at the pinnacle of what we tasted.

  Attractive citrus, off dry, good acidity, round but not overly fleshy.

• 2010 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg

  As expected, leaner, drier and more herbal than the '09. Good minerality. Lemon and tea on the finish.

  Creamed corn. Slightly sweet, good material. Easy wine for early drinking.

• 2009 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Reserve

  Same aromatics as the basic cuvée but racier, more mineral and less obvious sugar. Very good.

• 2010 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Brand

  Already complex aromatics. This downplays the fruit. Grand acidity. Finer and leaner than either of the '09s. An excellent terroir-driven wine.

• 2009 Albert Boxler Gewurztraminer Reserve

  Medium yellow. Strong lychee scent. Sweet and plodding with a mid-palate gap in flavor intensity. This does not have the acidity to age.

  More floral. Viscous yet drier impession due to better acidity. Very nice inner mouth perfume. This is more like it.

  Medium yellow. Grapefruit and perfume on the nose. Good spiciness, slightly sweet, elegant feel.

• 2006 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Sommerberg Sélection de Grains Nobles

  France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

  Honeyed with some citrus. Viscous, beautiful mouth feel. Well balanced, good intensity without being a blockbuster. Excellent SGN.
