Introduction

An evening when Musar showed how brilliant it can be. The '66, '91 and '99 were all thrilling wines, provided one can cope with the V/A and the brett. A couple of faulty bottles, and a couple of other vintages that are not up to par. But far more hits than misses.

    Fat, a marked banana tone, lush; it also has those cobweb and butterscotch flavours that you get with premoxed burgundies, but in this case they don't render the wine heavy and lifeless. Interesting rather than delicious. I enjoyed past bottles more.

    Orange, a smoky sulphuric entry, nutty and oxidative, fresh and grippy, this came and went in the glass, but the good sips were very exciting

    A billowing horsey nose, but ripe and tangy on the palate, tasted much younger than its years with its rich fruit and exotic spices. Fresh, mouth filling, thrilling

    The third time in a row that this has been corked. Otto's had the same experience with different bottles, which suggests that there's a more systematic fault here.

    From magnum: not much flavour here, but it's got a lovely silky texture and a floaty quality that you get with old wines. Tasted older than the '66. Enjoyable

    This was quieter on the nose, but beautifully rich and fruitcakey on the palate, fresh and by Musar standards quite refined. Lovely.

    I love this lily of the valley V/A nose followed by the rich sweet fruit and all the herbs and spices. Fresh, multi-layered and it goes on and on. Brilliant.
