Introduction

Met up with Keith and Rich and opened some bottles to celebrate my impending move to Chicago. Nia charged $20/bottle for corkage (higher than we had thought) and the food was pretty good. They do tapas, so we ordered ceviche, bacon-wrapped dates, risotto, calimari, and some caprese salad.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année 93 Points

    France, Champagne

A big and powerful Champagne. The nose is packed with bready notes with electric citrus and floral tones. The palate is rich and creamy with lots of pear, apple, fresh linen, and vanilla. This is still super young, and has incredible energy and acidity to the palate. It sat open on the table for a while and the air really unleashed a classy, champagne. Great stuff.

  • 2002 Jacques Picard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Drank alongside a 2002 Bollinger Grande Annee this was a bit leaner with more citrus notes and less bready notes. Really enjoyed its minerality and fresh pear and lemon tones - drank this with some ceviche and thought the pairing was spot on. Great stuff.

  • 1998 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Big nose of gunflint, dense lemon, sea air, white florals and vanilla. At first, the palate seemed a bit advanced, but surprisingly it seemed to freshen up a bit with air. Very complex wine with layers of pears, apples, lemons and floral notes. The finish lingered and had medium acidity. Wish I had more of these.

  • 2004 Domaine Truchot-Martin Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Blanchards 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Another fabulous 2004 Truchot. The fruit was rich on the palate and Keith remarked that the nose reminded him of Oregon Pinot. I could see the similarity as the fruit was cool but vibrant with a mossy undertone to it. The palate was elegant with red fruit, florals, damp earth and spice. Looking forward to aging my others for a while.

  • 1997 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This had been slow ox'd for a couple of hours. Even with time, the nose was reductive to me - with lots of plum, tar, and floral notes. The palate was medium-bodied and the tannins have softened up nicely. The flavors were vibrant with dark fruit, more tar, and a truffle note to it. Wasn't blown away by this, but I think it'll gain complexity with some additional years and/or air.
