Flight 1 (16 Notes)

  • 2006 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-Bages 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Big rich butter and apples and peach fuzz with tangerine. Cotton with fresh linen. The palate is not nearly as rich as the nose lets on.
Oddly lighter with a huge acidic back end. Maybe not enough body for me. Not sure what to think really.
The nose screams New World Chardonnay - odd. Palate is just confusing - light almost watery. Green and stemmy qualities. Lots of sulfur too.

  • 2007 Sanguis The Oracle of Delphi 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Plump red berries. Flashy and sexy nose. Some liqueur quality from its youth. Some red pepper spice and cotton candy. Not too heavy on the palate. Some nice pink pepper and bubble gum flavors.
Fun nose. The palate is thinner and may need some time to develop and come together. Looking forward to tryin in a few years.

  • 2005 Château de la Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Generations Gaston Philippe 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

With Brad and Andrew after late night El Cid on Kedzie.
Big bold masculine and black. Gamey, spicy, charcoal driven with lots of dark coarse ground coffee, bitter cocoa nibs and black plums and anise.
The palate is a bit awkward but there is lots of fruit and unique qualities that are intriguing and gain some merit. I like the wine if it were half the price.

Yeasty, blue cheese. Pretty red flowers. A little closed. Raspberry, light smoke and peat moss.
Nice fleshy palate with good grip. Rustic dirt dusted stone berries. Solid finish. Real nice.

  • 2005 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Really ripe and fruit driven. Light plum and cherries with nice clean sea breeze.
Touches of rhubarb and mint leaf. Clean palate with nice mid palate. Balanced to a T. Drinking really well.

  • 2005 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Wow. This was super extracted while still being lighter styled and elegant - like the Queen in chess - bad ass but elegant.
Candied fruit salad - cocktail. Red anise, white licorice, pepper. Great pear and fruit jammy aroma with white truffles and meaty cigar box.
Super pronounced and pungent qualities. Really flashy and sexy drive. Needs another decade to settle down for real.

  • 2002 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

A little leather. Some cloudy color showing a little age. Rusty iron gate and earthy road.
Palate is a little leaner. Really woody - almost missing a mid palate.
    Not that impressive.

  • 1998 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Serious serious earthy shroomy funk driven wine. Rustic and old leather. Dirty fruit with pungent brie laced red cherries and passion fruit even.
Some new car aromatics. Light spice. Palate follows suit with an earth driven somewhat savory red stewed vegetation. Long finish. Really liked this vintage.

  • 1977 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 88 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Almost done. Super funky and cheesy. Really old but unique and fun to try.
Mint and a little dirty leather with old iron fence. So much Old musty moth balls and franky, shit - I mean manure. A little old car scent - Italian presence overall.
Extra dirty feet. Less tasty and more unique.

  • 2001 Vérité Le Désir 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

We picked this as Sonoma Cabernet - it just didn't have the ripeness of Napa fruit. Nice and well restrained with serious finesse.
Still some moderate ripe liqueur fruit. Blackberries, licorice. Not too sweet cocoa and coffee. A little green bell pepper and an okay austere mid palate. Some cult texture.
Nice potpourri and flower flavors with clean and focused cherry pits and other pitty fruit.

  • 2008 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Super pungent funky mushrooms, yellow crayola crayon(?) and sweet corn. Linen, sassafras.
Little thinner palate, higher acid but pleasant. Fresh and ripe. Old World meets newer ripe fruit.

  • 2001 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Cranberry, sweet spice and some meaty savory red stew - mixed mire poix veg.
A little sappy, some maple syrup nose. Sweeter nutty caramel.
Great palate - loved the mouth feel. Rich fruit with a black mineral core. Elegant and supple but masculine.
Great tannins giving the wine a nice backbone with grip but poise.

  • 1986 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted alongside a 1996 Lalande - thanks Ken!
I preferred the younger sibling. Really old soy, leather, raspberries. Lots of must, old iron funk, cheesy.
More funk on the palate, a little thinner and more resolved (duh). A refreshing quality like Charleston, SC after rain.
Clean finish. I'd say drink soon.

  • 1996 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Out performed the '86 - just more fruit, life, extraction and intrigue, balance - really everything.
Sporty lively fruity black black cherries, elegant flowers, new leather. Some tea leaves and prunes.
Moderate acidity with nicely resolved tannins. No alcohol noticeable.

  • 1997 Gaja Barbaresco 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Dark roasted coffee grounds and almond butter, toffee and bark. Chunky bar in a glass. Ripe rusty spice iron as well. Fresh road tar- still hot from being just laid.
Really yummy ripe styling still showing lots of youth. Good year with its true colors shining through. The single vineyards must be out of control. I'd say this can go another ten to fifteen with ease.
