Black pepper, flowers, and dark berry nose. Lighter concentration palate, slightly tarry blue-black fruit, underripe midpalate, quite fresh finish with sappy herbs and pepper.
New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
Leads with a primary crushed purple grape nose, plenty of herbal tea and tobacco. Palate is refined and balanced, almost characterless in its straight-and-narrow flavor profile and mouthfeel. Adds some clay/earth on finish. Young.
USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
Dominated by buttery oak on the nose, followed by sweet black fruits, cedar, pipe tobacco ash, and salty mineral. Mid-weight palate, tart red cherry, angular body, creamy finish with a salty edge. Not convinced this will improve with more bottle age. Throws a good amount of sediment.
Bright, expressive, spicy dark blue fruit, young alcohol giving a touch of acetone on the nose. Nice texture to palate considering the price point, dark berry compote, woodspice, juicy through the finish. Not too young.
Opens with roasted red meat, crushed blackberry, black olive paste, and dark chocolate. Full-bodied palate has bitter mocha, incense/spice, tart black fruit, and a good textured finish as if there's some clay and mineral.
