Introduction

Dinner with our good friend, Maison Champy's winemaker Dimitri Bazas, hosted by our other great friends at Knightsbridge Wine Shoppe in Northbrook.

Flight 1 - Pre-Dinner 2009 and 2010 Red Wine Tasting (11 Notes)

  • 2009 Maison Champy Vosne-Romanée 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

    Black cherry aromas with blackberry and black cherry flavors. Easy to enjoy right now but there is some good acidity and structure in the background that give this wine a slightly restrained character for now, so probably better in a few years.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Chambolle-Musigny 86 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

    Soft red fruit on nose and palate with modest spice. Easy to enjoy today, but I didn't really find much Chambolle character or nuance. A good 2009 Villages level wine to enjoy in the next few years.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 86 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Firm black fruit aromas with some distinct oak. Palate shows fruit a bit more subtle and supple, with power emerging on finish. Better in a few more years. Good for its level.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Fresh cherry aromas with big spice and fresh herbs. Same fruit profile on palate, somewhat firm structure for a young Volnay, but with very elegant charm. Better in a couple of years. Another great value from Champy.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

    Black cherry and boysenberry aromas and flavors. Firm fruit and tannins, slightly more rustic and backward than the Lavaux St.-Jacques also tasted tonight, which I slightly preferred.

    Fresh black fruit aromas to start with modest spice. Black cherry and black berry flavors, dense and meaty, behind firm but elegant strcuture right now. Bette rin a few years. Slight preference for this over the Cazetiers also tasted tonight.

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Red and black cherry aromas with good dried herbs in background. Similar fruit profile on palate behind fairly firm tannins that seem more prominent than when last tasted in the fall, making it slightly less accessible today.

  • 2009 Maison Champy Mazis-Chambertin 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    My favorite of the tasting part of the lineup tonight. Mostly ripe red cherry aromas, then some black cherry in background along with some sweet baking spice. Slightly more rustic on the palate, with everything in good proportion. Lots of substance and power making this certainly ageworthy.

  • 2010 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Chapelle 90 Points

    Elegant red and black cherry to start with forthcoming aromatic spice. Same fruit on palate, well balanced with elegant and subtle acids and tannins. Good spice and black cherry on big finish.

  • 2010 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins Très Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    Black fruit aromas with modest spice and a slightly rustic style. Similar on palate with fairly dominant tannins and a slightly coarse finish. Cellar for at least 5 years, probably better in 10.

    Lush, ripe apple aromas along with some sweet poached pear character. Same ripe fruit on palate with baking spice hints. At its peak today.

  • 1999 Domaine Laleure-Piot Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

    Lots of mature fruit aromas, still mostly fresh with just hints of maturity. Ripe apple and pear flavors with good density and some buttered popcorn character. Still holding strong. Served blind to Dimitri Bazas from Maison Champy because of Champy's recent acquisition of Laleure-Piot.

Flight 3 - Red Wine with Dinner (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Maison Champy Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    Ripe red fruit with modest spice. Same sweet fruit on palate, very characteristic of the 2006 vintage, slightly less rugged than I normally expect from Pommard 1er. Drinking well now, most likely at its peak drinking now and for the next 5 years.

  • 2006 Maison Champy Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Slightly floral with bright red fruit aromas. Mostly ripe red cherry flavors with some black cherry and baking spice in background. Big and firm fruit balanced nicely with firm tannins and acidity. Great value wine. I had the chance to revisit this wine the subsequent 2 nights from the same bottle and it held fairly steady, indicating to me this will hold well for years going forward.

    Floral start with lead red fruit aromas. Similar red cherry and raspberry with good acidity but a slightly short, lean and simple finish. Probably in its peak drinking window now.

  • 2007 Maison Champy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Baking spice aromas with ripe black fruit. Palate shows ripe black cherry and boysenberry with more nuance and better density and follow through than many other 2007s at this level, but still not as good a wine as its 2008 counterpart in the next glass.

    Red fruit aromas with some nutmeg and cinnamon aromas. Good cross-section of cherry flavors on palate with good density and some firm structure. Needs a few years in the cellar.

  • 2006 Maison Champy Charmes-Chambertin 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Ripe red fruit with a slight gamy character. Firm structure in front of the good ripe fruit with moderate length and intensity on finish. Good, but not at the same level as the Champy 2006 Mazis-Chambertin or Chambertin-Clos de Beze tasted in the next two glasses.

  • 2006 Maison Champy Mazis-Chambertin 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Black fruit aromas with background of new oak spice and some classic animale character starting to emerge. Flavors of black cherry and blackberry with a good meaty character and dense mouth feel. My favorite of the flight, just ahead of the Champy 2006 Chambertin-Clos de Beze.

    Dense black fruit aromas with modest spice. Same blackberry and black cherry flavors with fairly firm structure. This still needs at least 5 more years in the cellar. I took home the bottle with one glass left and finished it the following night, when it was more accessible and balanced.

    Black fruit aromas with a real Gevrey animale character. Bulky black fruit on palate with lots of structure and power that will need a few more years to integrate and soften a little more.

    Good black fruit aromas with hints of Gevrey sauvage, anise and black pepper. Same good fruit and spice on palate, very well balanced and supported by the wine's structure and minerality. Easily the wine of this final flight. An excellent value wine for its level.
