The Cos '09 blew everybody away

  • 2006 Château Cos d'Estournel 92 Points

  • 2009 Château Cos d'Estournel 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Wow what a nose, you do not need to go near the glass to get the powerful nose of cassis, cherries, plumbs, vanilla and tar. I can see that this will not be too everybody's taste as this really is not classical Bordeaux. Very fruit forward with a rich complex mouth and a very very long length but there is elegance and balance there. The thing is you look around the room and everybody has a grin on their face and so do you. Well done Cos an amazing wine which will be interesting to watch develop and I am sure will provoke lots of debate. 98+

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

You walk up to a table and there is one of your heroes standing there pouring wine Alfred Tesseron, all you can do is shake his hand and thank him.
This chateau is getting better and better under the guidance of Alfred and his niece Melaine.

There is not much I can add about this wine but tell you to go out and drink some. Lovely.

Flight 2 - Paulliac & St Julien (14 Notes)

The '09 Pichon Baron and Ducru were amazing but what really hit me was the quality of the Pibran and Croix de Beaucaillou which are bargains in comparison.

  • 2009 Château Pibran 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Nose of cassis, cherries, tar and vanilla. Rich mouth feel but not to flabby. Good balance and medium length. Tannins are present but I think this will be ready to drink in a year or two. A bargain.

  • 2009 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This is still very young but I can't wait to see how good this will get. As per my notes on the '09 Cos a lot of people will not like this style of Bordeaux wine due to its intensity but I think it still has a lot of finesse and balance. 98+

Flight 5 - Barsac & Sauternes (17 Notes)

The standout was the Suduirant's especially the '09 which was so fresh and drinkable. Of course my old favourite Guiraud was lovely for the price also (if you like them sweet).

Closing

After all that we decided to go to the Kensington Wine Rooms and drink some good Aussie Shiraz to clear our palates (Henschke). I would like to thank the good folks at Goedhius for arranging such a great evening and of course to the producers for their constant trips on the road showing their wines. If you have not bought any '09s yet I would recommend the cheaper Chateau and some of the second wines from the big boys. WOTN has to be the Cos '09 which I can still taste but I am sure a lot of people will not see it as "proper" Bordeaux.
