Veuve Clicuot Vertical

I thought i'd share my tasting notes from a fantastic Veuve Clicquot tasting.
The tasting was held in Stockholm, Sweden in the home of champagenexpert Richard Juhlin.
The wines were served in flights of three accompanied by food. Half of the wines came directly from the house, mostly the younger ones. i've marked them with (H)

The 95 was served as an aperitif. The other wines with white asparagus, bleak roe and beurre blanc.

• 1998 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Nice golden colour, vanilla, white flowers on the nose and palate. Fresh acidic and very elegant.(H)

• 1998 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Sec Rich Reserve

  France, Champagne

  Something as rare as a well composed and good demi-sec.Same basewine as in the regular-98, but with more added sugar. Honey, vanilla and fudge sums it up pretty good. Should go well with foie gras.(H)

• 1998 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Somewhere betwheen orange and pink in colour. Raspberries stands out together with strawberries and cream. When tasting it the vintage 98 comes to mind.(H)

  Lots of bread, mineral and citrus with a roasted buttery finish, very good. (H)

With Goat cheese salad and beetroots.

• 1985 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage

  France, Champagne

  From a magnum. Light pink colour with lots of Pinot aromas:leather, beetroots and tobacco. A lot of body and character. Good with goatcheese.(H)

  France, Champagne

  Elegant with leather and truffles aromas. Lots of power, fruit and flavour. The Pinot stands out once again.

Tuna croistini and caviar.

• 1990 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Creme brulé, honey and flowers on the nose, elegant and creamy.The acidity is there as well, what a fantastic year for champagne!

  France, Champagne

  Fat and round with lots of taste and flavour including hazelnuts, chocolate and honey. The aftertaste lasts forever.

  France, Champagne

  A fantastic colour resembling honey. On the nose orange, foie gras and chocolate. Candy, marsipan and some acidity on the palate, amazing.

Free range chicken, champagnesauce and greens.

• 1959 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Amber colour, almost still. A disapointment with very little fruit and acidity left.

• 1949 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Actually more alive then the -59. Sweet, creamy nose. A hint of mousse and lots of mushroom on the palate. Best of the old wines.

• 1921 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Aged wood, tar and smoke both on the nose and palate. Almost completly still and almost dead. Still it was a great experience. I should add that most of the tasters liked it far better then me.

A few different cheeses.

• 1964 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage

  France, Champagne

  Orange colour, at first extremly hard with lots of mineral. After a few minutes it opened up real nice. Fresh and sweet at the same time.
  The mousse was very much alive and present.

  France, Champagne

  Once again orange colour. Peanuts, butter and popcorn on the nose. Fresh and balanced. With layer upon layer of taste. I can't even start to describe it. The best champagne of the evening.

• 1975 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage

  France, Champagne

  From a magnum. Raspberries, strawberries and "earthy" aromas. More of a red Burgundy then champagne. The best rosé i've ever had. The wine was newly disgorged and decanted before being served(H)

That's it. A great tasting with great wines. Champagnes that stood out where: -90, -88, -75 Rosé
and the fantastic -62.
