Dinner with wine+art

w+a was in town on business and got together with a few of us for dinner at Kiki's. Theme was '99 and '01 Bordeuax. Always a pleasure meeting new poeple and being able to put a face to the moniker. Thanks to all for the wines and conversation. In attendance:

• 2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

  Pale color. Lemon oil, mineral and florals; bright. Balanced, nice weight across the palate; citrus, stone and mineral tones with good underlying acidity. Finishes well. 92-93 pts.

  France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

  Pale color. Mineral and apple notes dominate the nose and palate. Medium+ finish. 91+ pts.

• 1999 Château Léoville Las Cases 89 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

  Decanted very briefly off its sediment and rebottled for travel, poured about 4-4.5 hours later. Gorgeous bouquet filled with black currants, violets, cedar, florals and saddle leather. Medium-bodied; flavors of red fruit, dried herbs and earth. A bit weak on the midpalate and finish.

• 2001 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

  Deep crimson color, opaque core. Notes of leather, plums, red currants. With air, the herbal/"green" notes I associate with PLL appear. Full-bodied, with lovely dark fruit and herb qualities on the palate; hints of earth. Finishes well.

  Deep color. Similar to the '99, shows a lovely mix of red and black fruit aromas, along with notes of violets and florals and old leather. Medium+ tannins, shows some power; black fruit and spice qualities, hint of earth. 92+ pts.

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From a half bottle. Deep honey gold color. Notes of honey, apricot and marmalade with spice undertones. Rich texture, with honey, caramel apple and baked apricot flavors. Long, long finish. 94+ pts.

• 2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 94 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

  From 375ml. Lighter color than the Guiraud. Notes of lemon, pear, peach and honey; whereas the Guiraud was deep and pwerful, this is bright and racy. Palate follows the bouquet; citrus, honey and tropical fruit flavors. Lovely acidity with a long finish. 94-95 pts.
