Dark golden orange in the glass. Really interesting nose with notes of hazelnut oil, apple, and strawberry, and anise. Similar notes on the palate. Frizzante, dry, and slightly tannic. Great acidity and minerality with a some green tea on the finish.
Aromas of apple, orange blossom, lemon zest and sublte hints of petrol on the nose. Elegant structure of acidity and minerality and a medium long finish. Revisited later in the evening it had opened up bit more with time in the glass.
Delicious nose with notes of tropical fruit, orange, tangerine and ripe apple. Slightly sweet on the palate with mouthwatering ripe acidity and a med long to long finish. Very nice.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Interesting nose for a white burg. A little earthy mixed with notes of apple and sea spray (Julius noted that it "smells like lobster"). Similar on the palate, but with less noticeable earthiness. Nice acidity, medium finish, and good with food. I would be willing to bet that if it was open longer, some of the funkiness would blow off and the wine would open more.
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Served blind. Dark ruby color in the glass. Notes of cassis, blue fruit, vanilla, toasted oak and pyrazine on the nose. The acid and tannin seemed low on the first few sips which initially had me thinking new world structure, but high tannin and medium acid structure subsequently became apparent (for whatever reason). Medium to full bodied. My guess based on the pyrazine and structure was a Bordeaux variety and after Julius revealed a hint about the quality of the vintage, my final guess before the reveal was 2005 Bordeaux.
Black cherry, vanilla, oak and a bit of earthiness on the nose. Medium full body with very well integrated medium high tannin and acid. Medium long finish. Drinking very well right now. Nice stuff.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Creamy vanilla and red fruit on the nose. Similar on the palate with medium high tannin and acid and a medium long finish. Nice stuff. Of the two CDP tasted, this one was showing better at the moment but it was speculated that the 04 Cuvée du Vatican would hold up better in the long run.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Dark ruby color in the glass. Red fruit, spice and hints of resin on the nose. Similar on the palate with a smooth mouthfeel, medium high tannin and acid and a medium long finish.
Classic Cabernet nose with notes of cassis pyrazine and moderate oak. Smooth and elegant mouthfeel. Medium body, tannin, and acid with a medium to medium long finish. Mature and drinking well.
Rich, but not over the top, nose with notes of black cherry, dark chocolate syrup and liqueur. Similar on the palate with noticeable, but well-integrated oak and a smooth mouthfeel. Medium to full bodied with medium tannin and acid. Solid Cali cab.
USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
Rich nose with black cherry, eucalyptus, and oak. Full-bodied with smooth oak integration, medium high tannin and medium acid. Sweet ripe fruit, unctuous, and a long finish.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Medium dark ruby in the glass. Funky savory nose mixed with sour cherry. Similar on the palate but still quite lively for its age with medium high to high tannin and acid. Drinking well right now.
Intially a little funk on the nose but it seems to blow off quickly. Ripe black cherry fruit on the nose mixed with spice and hints of scorched earth. Similar on the palate with medium high tannin and acid. Medium finish. A particularly refined example of its region.
