Introduction

An impromptu Bachelor wine dinner with my best mates. Lovely wines and food, most importantly is best company.

Flight 1 - Flight 1 - Chave, CDR (1 Note)

Served blind. I was intended to serve this wine as house pour for my wedding lunch. Very good CDR but at the end we thought a more fruity S.A syrah might be better appreciated by non-wine drinkers in the wedding.

  • 2010 J.L. Chave Sélection Côtes du Rhône Mon Coeur 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

    Alcohol :: 14.5%
    Bright purplish ruby. The aromas is high tone and fresh, showing refreshing peppery note with sweet core of red raspberry, blackcurrant, candy and kirsch. This medium bodied CDR is pretty approachable but not at all fully expressive as there are some wood and tannin needed more time to better integrated. However, it does possesses sufficient level of attractive lush dark fruits which have no problem to fully absorb the oak and tannin. Medium length with good power and intensity (for a CDR) at the end with peppery, earthy and woody aftertaste. Lovely.

Flight 2 - Flight 2 - Meo (1 Note)

  • 1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Alcohol :: 14.5%
    Opened for 4hrs. Dark garnet core, light hue. Sweet core of strawberry, raspberry and plum, spices like clove and cinnamon, perfume but a little musky. Medium bodied, soft elegance mid palate with good depth, slightly straightforward but this is quite a dense wine for sure. Tannin is pretty firm and strong but seems lacks a bit of fruits for the right balance and support. Intense long finish. Not bad but not that excited as the label suggests.

Flight 3 - Flight 3 - Selosse (1 Note)

My buddy generously share this bottle with me as he knows this is one of the top wines on my wish list!

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Alcohol :: 12.5%
    Opened for 9hrs. Medium copper gold. This is really quite classy and elegance as well as good underlying power. The high tone and captivating oxidative note brings on the complex, intense aromas of melon, peaches, copper, yellow floral as well as exotic spices all tightly coiled in a highly refine and focus package. Intense sweet core that is tightly coil with complex, deep layer of yellow fruits, red cherry, herbs as well as solid mineral backbone. Long finish, lingering and persisting. A sleek, pure Champagne by Selosse and despite of 9hrs of slow ox, this is still tight and not fully giving. The impeccable balance and structure suggested this wine will continue to evolve in the bottle for at least another 7-10yrs if not more. 93-94+

Flight 4 - Flight 4 - Rayas (1 Note)

High expectation but kinda underwhelming.......

  • 1998 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 90 Points

    Alcohol :: 14%
    Cloudy maroon red. Floral and peppery spices highlighted the complex profile of sweet red cherry, strawberry and lavender, earth and kirsch, dried fig paste, however there is a hint of rustic edge, too. Medium bodied. Sweet core of complex cherry flavors highlighted with peppery spiciness, mineral, clove and Provençal herbs. Some tannin for better grip, but a bit of rustic / rough edge. This is a powerful Rayas, not quite the elegance and refinement from both 99 and 00. Long powerful finish.

Flight 5 - Flight 5 - Bord (2 Notes)

- Angelus, nose was beautiful but weak on the palate
- Las Cases, brilliant!

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Opened for 2hrs. Dark garnet core, light brownish hue. The nose is sweet and intriguing. Very sweet, plum and blackcurrant intermixed with leather, tobacco and capsicum.There is another layer of earth and cinnamon at the background, some florals too which makes this wine really seductive and compelling. Medium bodied, good acidity, integration and harmony but somehow the mid palate is a bit hollow and though finished with good grip, but kinda simple. However, this is delicious though not utterly high complexity nor great depth.

  • 2004 Château Léoville Las Cases 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Opened for 9hrs. Dark ruby red with medium ruby hue. Fresh aromas of new wood, mocha with tons of blackcurrant fruits on the core. Medium - full bodied, with pencil leads, vanilla, blackcurrant and blackberry fruits and culminated with excellent mid palate depth. Perfectly balance, wonderful freshness. Tannin is well defined and silky, but firm and grippy. Lots of juicy and succulent dark fruits tailing at the intensely long finished. Though still young, but there is this friendliness in it and really really yummy. This wine will easily improve in the bottle for another 5-7yrs. 92-94

Flight 6 - Flight 6 - 'To' Brother! (1 Note)

This was one of the best wines I have had in 2011 and I'm really glad that I can have this again in 2012! CDP lovers should at least try this once in their life time.

  • 2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Double decanted for at least 6hrs. Dark ruby red, almost opaque. Oh, this is as breathtaking as the previous bottle, perhaps a little, just a little bit more approachable. Utterly seductive, pure and deep aromas of lavender, violet, rose petal surrounded the sweet core of kirsch, sweet red cherry and raspberry, backing up with unbelievable freshness. With time, assortments of herbs, spices and smoke meat emerged which added even better depth and breadth. You need to nose this to believe! This full bodied, top notch CDP is highly polished with incredible harmony, even at this infant stage. Breathtaking intensity and concentration but with incredible precision and focus. Super silky mouth feel and gorgeously textured. Tannin is there for additional grip and bite but well define and show casing finesse and class. Again, the completeness and the never ending finihsed, purity and finesse blown me away! 95-97+

Flight 7 - Flight 7 - Dessert to end (1 Note)

  • 1993 Château Pajzos Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos 90 Points

    Opened for 1.5hrs. This is as good as the previous bottles. Similar notes but perhaps this bottle is slightly tighter, I believe is due to the preparation but delicious all the same. No rush to drink this. Smart buy.
