• 2004 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Marcenasco is a subzone in La Morra and we have here a blend of 3 vineyards.
  Roasted coffe with vanilla. Cherry and floral notes.
  Med body, very tannic and tight. A little less vanilla on the palate with sour cherry and plum.
  One of the 1st modernist and now probably in between....

• 2004 Rocche Costamagna Barolo Bricco Francesco Rocche Dell'Annunziata

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  From La Morra. Lighter color than the Ratti. Potpourri, smoke and wild strawberries. Tight and closed. Cherry and flowers on the palate. A little short finish right now. Overall a nice Barolo.

• 2004 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Torriglione

  From La Morra. Next door from Rocche dell'Annunziata. Big oaky nose with almost jammy fruit. red fruits on the palate with coffee and vanilla. Definitely modern and the question is will the oak integrate or not.

• 2001 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe

  From Castiglione.
  Great nose: tar, smoke and floral notes. Earthy, a hit of orange. Still quite tannic and complex. Very good and still very young!

  From Novello.
  40% of new oak (barriques). Modern. For me the oak is still too much up-front and obvious. Not my style.

• 2000 Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  Made from the rose clone. No new oak here but only large barrels. Beautiful wild nose with truffles. A little heavy on the palate which is disappointing after such a great nose.
  Overall a good Barolo.

• 1999 Elio Grasso Barolo Riserva Rüncot

  From Monforte d'Alba. thin soil.
  Rather traditional producer but for this cuvee he uses some new oak which is still very much present.

• 1998 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Vigna Enrico VI

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

  From Casteglione Falletto. Only barriques used.
  Rather enjoyable with truffles, sweet fruits supported by a fine acidity.
  On the modern side, less than the Grasso Runcot though, but well crafted.
