Round Barn Winery Visit

This winery is located in Southwest Michigan. Allred, his girlfriend and I stopped into the winery this Summer on our way to Wyncroft for a tasting a vineyard dinner. I have visited this winery before. It was formerly known as Heart of the Vineyard. It is a very picturesque winery with a nice rustic tasting room and scenic 100+ year old round barn where weddings and other events are held. The tastings are free and they have a nice deck overlooking their vineyards and barn.

They offer many wines to taste as well as their brandies and microbrews. The best and most unique items available for tasting are their fruit brandies which are quite good. The wines here were lacking as you can see from my notes. On past visits I have purchased their sparkling wine. Here are my notes:

  I have had this sparkling wine before and it has shown better. Apple notes with a low bead. The bottle may have been opened for a while. 83 points.

• 2005 The Round Barn Winery Dry Riesling 80 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  Made in a dry style. Surprisingly good minerality but the wine was one dimensional. Tart apple notes. 80 points.

• NV The Round Barn Winery Vineyard Tears 78 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  This is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Gewurztraminer. Light bodied and lightly oaked with some spice notes on the finish. 77-78 points.

• 2004 The Round Barn Winery Riesling 76 Points

  USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore

  This was made in a semi-dry style. Simpler than the dry Riesling and lacking in acidity. Drier than I expected. Notes of green apple. 75-76 points.

  Probably the best white at this winery. A very nice germanlike nose on this wine. Moderately sweet with lush tropical notes. Typical Gewurz spiciness on the finish. Well made. 84-85 points.

  I was surprised they were pouring this older vintage since more recent vintages had been released. Drink now. Light to medium bodied. Cherry notes with a bite to the finish. 83 points.

  Despite being way overpriced at $45 this wine was very good and the best red poured. 2 years in oak. 50 cases made. Medium to light bodied. Smooth and integrated fruit and tannins. 85 points.
