Chabolle Musigny Dinner at Lavandou

Introduction

Mike was in town and twelve of us got together to drink the wines of Chambolle with one pseudo Chambolle, 2009 Gros frere et soeur clos vougeot musigni. As usual Lavandou did a great job hosting us. Although very small sampling, I found Truchot, Barthod and Gibourg feminine where two amoureuses masculine. I was especially happy with how well the Barthod drank.

Flight 1 - Champagnes (2 Notes)

  • NV Ruinart Champagne Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    Bright but shy sweet red fruits, strawberry, a hint of copper, caramel and yeast. Fine small mousse, sweet palate with bright acidity. It is drinking extremely well, delightful and delicious. Perhaps not a serious champagne like Krug, Salon or Substance but drinking perfectly. Highly recommend.

    Sweet and vinous nose, apple tart, granny smith, yellow fruits and caramel. Somewhat coarse bubbles.

  • 1993 Bernard Serveau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    A pleasant surprise, pretty cherry fruits, raspberry jam and sous bois. Light and silky palate, bright acidity and still a hint of tannins. There is a hint of oxidation showing as the end note but not too bothersome. It is fully matured and need to be drunk up soon based on this example.

  • 2006 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 91 Points

    Not too expressive but displaying mostly red fruits, fresh cherries, raw button mushrooms and stem. It is a masculine wine and a bit like a shutdown Barolo. Not sure this will open up once day.

  • 2001 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns 94 Points

    Classic, pretty and coy Chambolle. Beautifully perfumed, red cherries, raspberry preserve, mineral and a hint of earth. Fruit, acidity and tannins are in perfect harmony. Just classic, beautiful Chambolle at its peak, not unlike Truchot in style with beguiling airiness and core energy.

Flight 5 - Two Les Amoureuses and a Les Sentiers (3 Notes)

    Classic Truchot deceptively light yet intense sweet flavor. Shy red fruits, fresh strawberry, candied raspberry, sap and wet autumn earth. Lovely bright core red fruits. Airy sweet palate, bright acidity and fully integrated tannins. Fully matured and drinking beautifully but I would not cellar too long.

  • 2002 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 93 Points

    Youthful and unyielding, strawberry, tar, slight hint of sous bois as well. Showing great structure, sappy palate, bright acidity and noticeable tannins. Very masculine expression. Despite a hint of sous bois the fruit seems still primary. I am hoping it will open up more with additional five years of cellaring. More impressive than enjoyable.

  • 1996 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points

    Beautifully perfumed and the nose more expressive than the 96 Mugnier Musigny I had in the past. Bright red fruits, red cherries and rapsberries, tar and a hint of cedar. Intense silky palate, bright acidity and still noticeable tannins. This is bigger scale than the Musigny. Very impressive and also enjoyable. IMO Mugnier made better wine in the 93 than the 96.

  • 2009 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes Flawed

    I detected a slight hint of TCA. It was a controversial call and others thought just young and muted with sulfur. It was a though call but Ben G initially agreed and confirmed at the end of the night and I agreed at TCA taint was more noticeable.

  • 2009 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 94 Points

    It was hard to source the 09 Gibourg but I was able to get a bunch from a store in Paris. Pretty floral nose, crushed raspberry and blackberry mixed, dark cherry and sweet spices. Soft and subtle silky palate, bright acidity and good structure. It is drinking beautifully with sweet fresh primary fruits but will benefit from 10+ years of cellaring. I don’t anticipate this wine shutting down hard. Very pretty wine.

  • 2009 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Very ripe candied fruits that the critics of the 09 will find as a flaw. Reductive nose displaying dark fruits, black cherries, confected black cherries and black berries. Ripe candied fruit expression continues in the palate but I actually like the sweet forward fruit here.
