Introduction

We met up again, ordered pizzas and KFC and opened our wines. The theme today was "Wine varietals or regions you've never had before", all blind. Interestingly enough, there were a lot of Italian wines (perhaps due to the obscurity of some of its native grapes). The Zinfandel was very interesting while the Chateau Montus which I brought is really just a sleeping Giant.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2010 La Ferme du Mont Côtes du Rhône La Truffière

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

    Popped and poured. This was the only one that wasn't served blind.

    Classic white rhone flavours. Floral, mineral driven, white fruits, guava, dry style with a touch of lanolin. Slightly weighty on the palate. Good entry level effort. Like this a lot.

  • 2007 Falesco Lazio Ferentano

    Italy, Latium, Lazio

    Everyone thought this was an Italian chardonnay. A kiss of oak and nice fruit. If you like a balanced chardonnay without too much oak, this is a good and unique substitute.

  • 2006 Château Malartic-Lagravière Le Sillage de Malartic Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    I guessed this quite easily as a Bordeaux Blanc. Nicely integrated oak flavours into the semillon sauvignon blanc blend. A touch of grass but more citrus notes and a saline quality to it; including crushed rocks. Not the most refined white wines but quite tasty.

  • 2008 Argiolas Costera

    Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT

    Popped and poured. We couldn't really figure out this one. Closest was a Rhone wine.
    Very vibrant and rustic wine with loads of fruit and possibly every kind of berry was inside with some wild herbs. A lovely food wine that is quite delicious.

  • 2005 Cerulli Spinozzi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane Torre Migliori

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane

    No formal notes. Popped and poured.

    Didin't give me a strong impact. It was a tasty medium bodied wine, decent fruit, sweet plums, pepper and licorice. But this could have been from anywhere as it was blinded.

  • 2009 Terre del Vulcano Aglianico Beneventano Lava

    Italy, Campania, Beneventano

    Popped and poured.

    A very fruit forward and voluptous wine. Had nice notes of toast as tar as well. Ready to drink right now. Would probably be good with a BBQ.

  • 2006 Château Montus Madiran

    France, Southwest France, Madiran

    Splash & double decanted. No formal notes.

    This is a big boy. Thick dense and intense fruit with good depth of flavour and nose. The quality of the fruit is really good and it will take a while to unwind from its tightly wound self. Was more accessible 24 hours later but lacked the complexity.
    This really needs time.

  • 2005 Smidge Zinfandel The Tardy

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

    Looked oxidized in the glass. No formal nose.

    Had an oxidative nose of caramel, touch of cognac, liquer cherries, nuttiness as well. The same oxidative notes carried over to the palate. Medium bodied (surprising for its 15.8% alc) with rather precise flavours. Quite interesting zinfandel. Never had one done in this style before.

Closing

The night was full of high alcohol laden wines and I can't even remember which one I liked the best. That being said, it would probably be a toss-up between the La Truffiere (which wasn't blind) and Aglianico.
