A Couple of Burgs and a Pinot at Dinner

Introduction

Two couples, a few nice wines, and a very good dinner. We had a bunch of options for wine this night, but the smattering of pinots including the 2 village wines from the 2005 vintage seemed interesting to do.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2000 Charles Ellner Champagne Brut Prestige 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 45 minutes. Love this sparkler. Continues to show well, very consistent, with such fresh and lively fruit along with a mineral streak. Bright apple and pear notes, tropical. Very well balanced.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Zenith Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    Medium dark red color. Pop and pour with aeration. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. Very fruit forward in comparison to the burgs, nose shows raspberry, cherry, vanilla, light earth notes, and a touch of spice. The palate is consistent, soft, medium finish.

  • 2005 Henri de Villamont Pommard 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

    Dark red color. Popped and poured. Drank 2 glasses over 1.5hrs. I'd been wanting to try this for some time, the original bottle I had was corked. I didn't have real high expectations, but this bottle wowed me. Great nose with funk, earth, sous bois, dark cherry, florals, some leather, and a hint of butterscotch later. The palate is consistent, elegant in the mouth, nicely balanced with well integrated tannins. Long finish. Damn good stuff, and a pretty fair tariff. This was WOTN.

  • 2005 Louis Latour Marsannay 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

    Medium red color. Popped and poured with aeration. Nose is somewhat reticent, red fruit, cherry, cranberry, spice. The palate is metallic, tart cherry, iron, spicy on the finish, medium short finish with dry tannins.

Closing

The Ellner was excellent as usual. The biggest surprise was how well the de Villamont Pommard showed. Very impressive. Glad I got a replacement bottle instead of a credit for my corked bottle.
