Introduction

Among our favourite ( if not our outright favourite) wine events hosted at the Ivy league (or Oxbridge we should say) of the wine world BBR in London.
Modelled after the TV game the event comprises of blind tasting of a pair of wines and then two of BBR fine wine experts take turns to pitch what they think the wines are. At the end of their pitch we were asked to vote on which one we thought was right. Such a Fun event.

The Event was hosted by Rebecca Lamont and the Speakers were the ever amazing Anne Mchale BBR's Wine Education Manager and Demetri Walters BBR Fine wine specialist.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Prologue (1 Note)

Dimitri: Argued for cava, said that although it felt like champagne the lack of minerality was a give away this was no champagne
Anne: Argued for champagne.

Most of the guests went with Dimitri. We wrongly went with Anne!

  • 2007 Gramona Cava Argent Rosé Grand Reserva Brut Nature 92 Points

    Spain, Cava

    Blind tasted.
Bready, toasty, yeasty on the nose. The nose feels like to that of a well aged good quality vintage champagne. Creamy and long. Mild on th minerality. This is a wine of high quality and can rival a lot of entry level champagnes. Really worth the £18 price tag. 92+ from us

  • 2010 Andre Dezat & Fils Sancerre 92 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Ligth fruit, restrained wine, grassy feel to it. Herbaceous we should say, with light green citrus notes. High acidity and very well made. Felt like Loire and it was. 92 maybe more.

  • 2009 Michel Bouzereau et Fils Meursault Les Tessons 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    Blind tasted.
Citrussy, mineral, fattish wine, smoky oak notes, very chardonnay feel to it. A well made beautiful meursault with a lot of life ahead of it. Could use some time to integrate the oak but even this young it is impressive. 92+ from us.

  • 2006 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Blind tasted.
Textbook burgundian pinot nose. Strawberry, raspberry, light smoky feel to it too. Medium bodied, well round and with good tannin. Lacks a bit on the complexity front given the level and pricing. Has a bit of a modern feel to it if we could say so. 91+

We both went with Demetri. crowd was mixed.

  • 2010 Ktima Pavlidis Assyrtiko Emphasis 92 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

    Blind tasted.
Stone cold on the nose, mineral, restrained with light fruit. Reminded us of grand cru Chablis. Very refreshing thanks to its acidity. Has a light grassy feel to it too. This is a beautiful wine and its very interesting to see assyrtiko grown this high up. worth a lot more than the £14 price tag and would appeal to the lovers of Chablis. Really great. 92-93 and we will buy some for sure.

  • 2008 Ktima Pavlidis Thema Red 89 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Drama

    Blind Tasted.
The fruit here is bright, pronounced, nebbioloesque feel to it. High acidity. Good tannin. People really loved it and were surprised to find out it was a humble Greek red wine. Voted most interesting wine of the night. 89 from us though.

Flight 6 - Round 4 (2 Notes)

Dimitri: Argued for Rhone Syrah and Australia Shiraz
Anne: Argued for Cabernet Sauvignon

Pretty much everybody went for Demetri as no matter how much spin Anne tried to add it was impossible to pursuade these two spice bombs were Cab Sauv

  • 2009 Domaine Des Hauts Chassis Crozes-Hermitage Les Galets 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

    Blind Tatsed.
Young red fruit on the nose, interlaced with spicy notes. No oak here (or at least no new oak). Had a grenache feel to it to start more than a syrah. Young and vibrant on the palate, sweet core and although it is not harsh it has a lot of tannin on the finish. A touch too sweet for us. 89 for now

  • 2009 Elderton Shiraz 89 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Minty, spicy nose, can we say a bit of shoe polish notes? Some eucaliptus too. A very new world feel to this wine, with pronounced fruit and spices. 89

Anne: Argued for Pauillac

We went with Anne.

  • 2008 Château Haut-Batailley 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Blind tasted.
Speaks bordeaux from the start. Cedar notes, tobacco, very classic. Light integrated oak. Fruity and young with good palate presence. Entering its drinking window and we were urprised to find out this was only an 08. Very enjoyable even at this young age and we would suggest one drinks this earlier than otherwise would. 90-91 for the moment.

  • 1996 Château Lynch-Bages 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Blind tatsed.
Cedar, tobacco, light earth as textbook as it gets for a well aged left bank bordeaux. To the point we went on to say this is Pontet Canet 1996. Well secondary and absolutely a wonderful wine. This is the third time we try this wine this year and it is consistently a great wine. Another beautiful wine from 96. 93-94 this time
