Lunch with Gavin

Gavin was in town and E and I joined him and Praveen to a fabulous lunch at Jaan. The wines were by the glass. A bit overpriced, but all very decent.

• 2009 David Duband Gevrey-Chambertin 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

  This was quite an excellent village. It had a very pretty nose, full of bright, cherry aromas of cherries and and rapberries and some strawberry juice aromas, all very 2009 in its red-fruited expressiveness, along with a nice bit of Gevrey-ness with hints of earth, mineral and a little floral perfume. Very pretty. The palate was very enjoyable too, it had a very nice, juicy freshness for a 2009 to go along with crunchy, high-toned flavours of cherries and red berries lined with a little stony minerality and the slightest touch of bramble at the edges of its open-knit finish. Quite delicious, and while not the most profound of wines, it had a very nice sense of silky structure and balance that made it a very food-friendly wine.

• 2008 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Meursault 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  I thought this was yet another very impressive village - two in one sitting, a very good return! There was a classic Meursault nose on this wine, with butter and cream accents and a smoky, flinty mineral streak shading expressive aromas of lemon and white fruit along with a little touch of oak. Very attractive. The palate was really yummy too. It had everything I like about the 2008 vintage, with great fresh balance, and a lovely sense of definition and focus to its creamily textured Meursault flavours of fleshy white fruit seasoned with some juicy citrus notes and a sprinkle of lemon zest. Into the midpalate, the fruit was matched by some saline, almost salty nuances, with a suggestion of rather Chablis-like minerality and a tiny bit of spice riding beneath the Meursault flesh. Very complex and balanced for a village and lovely with a well-prepared Mackerel dish as well. A very nice wine.

• 2010 Château de Sancerre Sancerre 89 Points

  France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

  I enjoyed this rather more than on the last outing. While nothing really special, it nonetheless showed like a nice little Sancerre. From a bright nose of grass and white flower scents along with cirtussy lemons and grapefruit and a sea-shelly mineral twang into its neat, lively little palate with its fresh, racy flavour of lemon and grapefruit juicy, this was a simple but well-packaged wine that went very well with food. The finish was decent too, quite without any of the disjointedness I spotted with the last bottle as it exited in a little linger of lime zest with hints of mineral and spice. Very decent.
